What to do around Quepos??

We will be staying there around Thanksgiving for a few nights. Any ideas what to do besides Manuel Antonio? Do we really need to take a guided tour to see Antionio in the first place? I hear getting around is easy enough just catching taxis, bus, etc. All ideas welcome, we are a 50ish couple, reasonably active. :)

OP, I lived in Quepos for several months, and yes, you can self guide yourselves thru the MA park, but a guide can give so much more. Perhaps join in with another group when you arrive. The beaches of MA are of course not to be missed, but poor old Quepos is really just another battered, depressed, old, fishing village. Now if you fish, there are plenty of charters for that, but might I suggest a trip to Cafe Milagro across from the beach boulevard, have a great cup of joe, some banana bread to die for, and chat with the bilingual staff and see what's going on.

There are Tico dance clubs that cater to all ages, I always had a great time...love the salsa dancing. A small casino at the Best Western.

There is a farmers market on Saturday down by the beach, so if u are around, don't miss, especially the Menonite homemade granola...yummy!. A few good restaurants in town, but it is a town to just walk and explore. Two things, watch the strange Dude direct traffic outside the mercado, and give the chihuahua a scratch at the cigar store beside Cafe Milagro. It's a good town to relax and unwind in.

Have a safe and great holiday.

Thank you....can you tell me of other good things we can do in a day outside of Quepos? Our first time in CR, we are not sure what to do..we want to see all we can pack in to 4 days...especially jungle and wildlife, husband not a big fisherman. Is there a coffee plantation nearby? Just curious for whatever suggestions anyone has!!

Be sure and take a boat ride or kayak trip through the mangroves at Islas Damas north of town. If you're up for a horseback ride to a beautiful waterfall there are a couple of great outfitters in the area. Also great hiking at Carrara Reserve to the north or in the rainforest at Hacienda Baru, 1 hour to the south. For more info on the kind of activites available you could google Iguana Tour which has an office in Quepos.

Just to add OP, there isn't a coffee plantation close by due to growing conditions, a nice palm (palm oil) plantation though, which you can see off the hiway near Quepos.

Dear Wejeep...

You can rent a car for a day...an drive by 34 on the way to Dominical and Uvita...lovely ride...it is about 45 minutes all the way to UVITA...incredible beaches...and some coastal views...the road is in great shape...

You can ask around UVITA about some nice hikes to some nice waterfalls ...same also around Dominical..great chances to take some nice tropical kind of pictures...stop and say hi to the people at Tikivillas in UVITA...maybe next vacation you can stay with them...

If you are planning to do some swiming please ask locals about safety on the beaches...some strong rip tides around...that goes for...Manuel Antonio...Dominical and Uvita!

Most coffee plantation tours are located in the central valley less than an hour from SJO. You could however take a spice tour near MA. For more info check out www.rainforestspices.com

So many things to do in the area and all good suggestions here. Iguana Tours has many options avail. and they are a reputable provider in the area. I think the Damas estuary tour is very enjoyable. Horseback riding in the rainforest maybe followed by a spa treatment (www.raindropspa.com is very good.) If you are super adventuresome, whitewater rafting. Watching a wonderful sunset (and that's free!). It isn't mandatory for a guided tour thru the park but in my opinion, it's a wonderful experience to see wildlife thru the guide's scope, learn about the wildlife in the park, not to mention great photo opportunities. Enjoy your trip! Lisa
