Should we drive or fly from San Jose to Quepos?

A group of us are going to Costa Rica and staying in Quepos. We are all flying into San Jose (some at varied times). Our big question: Should we drive or fly between San Jose and Quepos? We have heard pros and cons for both. If it helps, we plan to leave San Jose in the morning after arriving late the night before. The return flight out of San Jose, back to the US, is on a Tuesday at 1:00p. Any suggestions and recent information would be wonderful!

Thank you!

The drive from the airport to Manuel Antonio is just under 3 hours, great roads all the way. Flying marginaly saves time if you take check in into account and is more expensive for a group also you are reliant on the flight shedulle and cant leave when you want. The views if not cloudy can be interestiing.

As you are leaving in the morning recommed renting a car and driving yourself alternativly a private driver to meet you at your hotel and take you. Shared Shuttle is also an option but is paid per peson and you will probably end up paying what you would for private transfer.

Here is a good article with the options available: tripadvisor.com/Travel-g291982-c109576/Costa…

For private driver my vote goes to the highly recomended company on this forum Tucan Limo: http://www.tucanlimoservices.com/

Have a great time in this wonderfuul country!

Since the new highway to Caldera has been opened, the drive to Quepos is actually one of the more beautiful, easier drives that Costa Rica has to offer. I think you'll really enjoy it.

It is a matter of personal preference. The flight is just a 20-25 minute flight while the land transfer would take 3 hours. For a group the land transfer would be less expensive

For a group the best way...drive...even cheaper with a private driver than with a shuttle company...but you can check of course with INTERBUS or Gray Line...great porffesional bus company...nice clean vehicles...most of the time here in Costa Rica the best is to dealt direct with owner operators,,,a middle men will be looking how to make more money...they can care less about safety or comfort...!

Of course flying is a great option...expensive but nice just 30 minutes flight...good idea one way by plane the other by bus...!

Were you going to get a car in Quepos anyways? If so, then I'd say get the car.

A shuttle would work if people are showing up on different days to.

You can get transport from www.montezumaexpeditions.com/schedules.htm

I use them to get to Montezuma all the time.

I think if you've got more than 4 people, you can rent a whole (10-14 person) van for a decent price. Call and ask.

We just got back with a group of 11. We were told the drive was 2 1/2 hours.. To return were were picked up at our villa at &;45 am and got to the airport at 11:45 am. We made 2 stops on the way . Once to use the bathroom and once to get last minute souvenirs. Costa Ricans are NEVER in a hurry. Delightful but you can not rush them. I think the driver really enjoyed our company and wanted us to have a wonderful time. Which we did but it did not take 2 1/2 hours.

We are driving from the airport to Quepos with children - did you feel it was safe to rent a car and make the drive? Are the roads clearly marked?

Thank you for your help!
