Restaurant Suggestions

Hi All:

We will be staying at The Real InterContineental Hotel in in Escazu in December -- including Christmas Day.

Any recommendations for restaurants located near The Hotel --Local Food, Sea Food, or Italian -- would be appreciated.

Would anyone know if most restaurants are open on Christmas Day? Something within walking distance would be nice.

Thanks So Much!!

Casona de Laly is a great traditional restaurant in Escazu. Recently they opened a second location. Both are very good. Frequented by many local families and visitors alike. Good Food and Good Prices. Friendly Staff. The newer one is in a more rural setting with animals out back, nice in daylight hours. The original one in downtown old Escazu is a bit more traditional also more crowded. The Hotel will be able to tell you what is open Christmas day. Escazu has every type restaurant imaginable. Typical CR food, Argentenian, Asian, Peruvian, Italian, chains like TGIF, Rosti Pollo well on and on. For a really nice place with a great view Monastre (sp?) is a nice choice. Not walking distance.

Escazu has any type of food you want. Pick a country, their food is there.

Some one fed me these the other night and they were good.

The new Sheraton hotel next to the Real has a restaurant that gets goods raves too and that should be in walking distance (never tried them).

Walking distance your choices may be limited. Its spread out strip mall in that area (as well as a large mall), but taxis are cheap and most of the restaurants are up towards calle viejo a Santa Ana.

Steak houses, Indian, Peruvian, available etc.

While Costa Rica maybe a foodies' bad dream, Escazu has great options

"Foodies...OMG"

foodie or foody (ˈfuːdɪ)

— n , pl -ies

a person having an enthusiastic interest in the preparation and consumption of good food

That seems to accurately describe the quest for good restaurants while visiting another location.

Right across from MultiPlaza there is Itskatzu Plaza. This is basically a mall of restaurants, a bit of something for everyone but also a bit overpriced. Many things are in the area IMO but there are some awesome restaurants to check out.

Not sure! Until a few months ago there were no street signs. The square where the Church is has the bus stops and most of the small shops/restaurants clustered in the same area. On Sat mornings the Feria is there as well. Any taxi will know and any bus that says "Escazu" will end up there. Casona de Laly is an easy walk (a few short blocks) away.

The multiplaza (La trattoria, Inka Grill Peruvian, Tintos y Blancos) and Itkatzu plaza (Il Ross pizza and Italian, Terruno Argentino, Damalfi Italian, Samurai Fusion Japanese, Chacay Peruvian, Las Tapas) are both within walking distance but it's not a pleasant or particularly safe walk (freeway/ramps/underpasses/parking lots).

Don't walk it!! BAD traffic speeding around the underpass. Fast inexpensive taxi ride is well worth it. Frankly I prefer any local neighborhood to Plaza Itkatzu but apparently lots of people like it. A mystery to me. Might as well be in the US. Even a Hooters..ugh. I have had quite a bit of dental work done at NOVA in the plaza so have eaten at the Argentenian and Italian Rsetaurants. Both very good. Also a good ice cream shop.

"What streets are downtown old Escazu ?"

Of the different parts of Escazu, San Miguel is Escazu Centro. Most of the restaurants described here and the location of The Intercontinental Real is in San Rafael. San Rafael is down the hill near the highway, san Miguel is up the hill, and San Antonio is way up the hill.

Escazu Centro is the old town and has a town feel, grid pattern streets, the church, post office, etc. San Rafael is the strip mall area that grew below Centro. The new office buildings, CIMA, hotels, malls, restaurants, developments, etc. are mostly located in San Rafael. the Costa Rica country club is the in between area (unsure which its in). Uphill from there (or on the other side uphill from Walmart) is downtown Escazu, which still feels like Costa Rica instead of a California suburb.
