We just came into SJO yesterday and the taxi drivers are fairly aggressive. Use the company that are the orange taxis. We paid 23 US for a ride *only metered taxis .. no zoned fare) but they were efficient and pleasant with an air conditioned vehicle.

That is the normal rate. Enjoy

At the airport, you will exit into a hallway before actually going outside. If someone approaches you here, it will be a representative of the official, orange taxi. They will direct you to a nearby booth where you will tell them where you are going and be charged accordingly. Pay in dollars or colones. You will be escorted through the waiting crowd outside to your taxi. The orange, official, taxis are the only ones allowed on the airport property, all newish and air conditioned and the drivers are very professional. At that time of night, the driver will probably wait with you to make sure you are safely inside your hotel. Because you prepay, no worry about the meter.

It is somewhere between $20 and $25 for most areas of San Jose.

Do you really NEED a taxi? For $9.50 per person you can catch a reserved shuttle bus. Use this outfit, which is USA based, and payment can be made via PayPal: http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr/

I have used this service more than 25 times and it has yet to let me down. Yes, the website is a bit cumbersome to manipulate, but gets easier over time! Too, if you do NOT find the hotel you need to get to...simply email http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr/ and inquire if it can be added.....they've always added what I've needed.

If you really require a taxi, know that the ORANGE cabs are the "official" airport cabs....anyone else is, essentially, an independent and not recommended....at least by me. There are "tricks" as to how to get a metered taxi: After collecting your bags, going through customs, and exiting to the outside....go right back up stairs to the departure area and catch a cab that is dropping somebody off who is leaving San Jose.

However, again, the shuttle ride via http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr/ is very cost effective and pleasant....

For a transfer IN...just find inside the terminal the TAXIS UNIDOS representative...they will provide you one of the great ORANGE official taxis outside...the great thing among others is that they will keep a record with your name and where that taxi and drivers names...in case of any problem they will know exactly who drove there...and they will tell you how much the service will be...do not try to save a couple dollars giving your CC information...it is not worth it!

Sorry but I will never give my CC information for a transfer In...if anything happens...it will be hard to immposible to get your money back...

Sorry but I was checking shuttle bus payments and cancellations...

Airport Shuttle, Inbound Connection & Shared-Ride Services

•More than 72 hour notice prior to departure = no cancellation fee.

•72 to 24 hour notice prior to departure = 50% cancellation fee.

•24 hour or less notice prior to departure = 100% cancellation fee.

•No show = 100% cancellation fee.

•No refunds are given for unused trips.

In my case I think is a lot better to deal with the Orange TAXIS UNIDOS...they are there and no prepayments...

Agree with Roadadvisor. 100%.

axxxtw - not sure why you think using a company based in the US should be a selling feature for someone coming to Costa Rica. In fact - to me it would be just the opposite... I would prefer to support local companies.

Besides - if there are more than 2 people - you save nada - it costs more than a taxi. And with 2 you save about $4.00 - but as RA points out - you have already paid and have no recourse if your plans change.

When we take a cab - we always take the orange airport taxis and have never had issues. The cabs are well kept and the drivers have always been curteous. (There is another even cheaper option - though not for everyone - the public bus into San Jose and then a taxi to your hotel..)

You can pay the drivers in either colones or US Dollars.

The exact reason is because one uses PayPal to pay them. If there are any problems, there is recourse to be had. I have not had ONE single need to have "recourse" after using the service over 23 times. However, I have had associates who DID: Nobody there at the airport to pick them up due to traffic snarls and such: Back in the USA, simply re-contacted the USA based outfit, full refund (all $9.50) and no guff. Why pay $25 when you don't need to? Too, many times the taxi rides are thrills in and of themself from the Airport into San Jose! Each to their own....

I guess your mode of transportation from the airport to your destination in San Jose depends somewhat on what you are looking for:

1. You are whipped from a long flight and just want to get to your hotel the quickest and easiest way possible. Take the orange taxi. No hassle, prepaid so no problem with the meter. Professional. Pay in dollars or colones. $20-$25 to many locations in San Jose.

2. You are looking for a somewhat cheaper solution and you don't mind if the shuttle you are waiting for may not show up or may show up 1/2 hour or hour later. Use Interbus or other airport shuttle. About $10 per person

3. There are three or more of you - definitely orange taxi.

4. You don't mind about any hassle and you don't have a lot of luggage and want to go cheap. Take the public bus. Go outside the airport and follow the sidewalk around to the road. Look to your right. You will see bus stops. Go there. When the bus comes, ask the driver "San Jose?" and he will say yes or no. Pay something less than a dollar. When you get to the bus station in San Jose, take a taxi to your hotel. Probably less than $4.

Private transfers from SJO to any hotel in San Jose area...about $ 25.00...

Once you add...

Parking lot about $ 3.00 per hour...

Driver time waiting for as long as needed it!

Fuel...

Kilometers...

You can see that is not a money making situation...in my case I do it as a service to my many clients...

Best deal take a Orange Taxi...and keep your CC in your wallet ...not woth it!
