Is it safe to drive from sjo to puerto viejo after 9pm

we are planning on doing the pacaure river adventure thursday jan 10th 2013.

Which adventure company should we go with? Can they shuttle us to the adventure from San Jose? What is the avg time this adventure will be done? Is it safe to drive to Puerto Viejo after getting back from the adventure and then picking up our 4x4?

Thanks in advance.

Road 32 is a tricky road...a lot of heavy trucks...and some times if is rain...is not nice at all...of course if somebody knows the road...will be no problem...but if you do not know the road...is better not to even try...and if you do...PLEASE...PLEASE be extra carefull..

Rios Tropicales is a great rafting comapny...good safety record!.

Roadadvisor knows his roads. Get up early and enjoy the views through the mountains the next day. Route 32 is scary at night when it is foggy or the rain is heavy. I have been in a bus when the weather was so bad that a passenger had to get off and walk in front of the bus as the visibility was so bad that the driver couldn't see the edge of the road. I would not do it and would very strongly advise against anyone doing it. However, during the day, the waterfalls at the roadside and the forest-covered mountains are simply breath-taking. Have a safe and pleasant journey!

Thank you road advisor for your helpful reply. Rios Tropicales looks great and offers the pickup from san jose. Now just trying to decide whether or not we'll do the drive the night after our rafting adventure.

I'm a little confused by your question. You asked: "Is it safe to drive to Puerto Viejo after getting back from the adventure and then picking up our 4x4?"

How can you drive to PV and THEN pick up your 4X4? If you're not picking up your vehicle until AFTER you get to PV then what are you planning to drive to get there? :- /

BTW, just about all the "adventure companies" offer pickup from SJ for the Pacuare and most of the majors can also provide transport to/from PV and/or Arenal. But did you realize that some of these companies also can pick you up from one location and deliver you to one of their other locations after you're done rafting? For example, they can pick you up in San Jose, take you rafting and then drop you in Puerto Viejo at the end of the day (or vice versa if that better fits your plans). I'm pretty sure Rios Tropicales can do this, though if they do there's a small fee for the extra service. Exploradores also offers essentially the same tour but with no extra charge for different pick-ups and drop-offs.

No, it will not be safe to drive after dark. Especially on that road, but in general anywhere in Costa Rixa. Don't do it. This should be an easy call.

I agree. That is a very dangerous stretch of highway with LOTS of big rig trucks. Add to that fog as a probablility and heavy rain as a possibility...Well....why in the world would you? Relax and let the tour guides take the lead. Prices are more than reasonable for what is offered.

There you have it. If you're renting your car in SJ, then you don't want to drive to PV from SJ after dark. OTOH, if you want to go rafting from SJ and somehow get to PV after the tour, you don't even really have to rent your car in SJ and self-drive or even hire a driver. The rafting companies can pick you up in SJ and drop you off in PV after your rafting trip and (depending on the rafting company) it won't even have to cost you an extra dime.

Save yourself a lot of unnecessary rigamarole and just continue to Puerto Viejo from Siquirres where the rafting trip ends. You'll be there by 1:00 or 2:00 and you're 3/4 of the way to Puerto Viejo. Get Rios Tropicales to drop you in PV where you can rent a beach cruiser (bicycle) to get around. If you have to have a car have it delivered.

Heading back to San Jose after the Pacuare then going to Puerto Viejo is horrible logistically.
