Getting from airport to bus station in San Jose

I did a quick search and did not see any recent posts on this, perhaps I missed it. But we are leaving for CR in 2 weeks, our first trip. We are planning on taking a directo bus from San Jose to Quepos. What I’d like to know is how to get from the international airport in San Jose to the bus station. Is there a quick way? Do we need to take a taxi? What is the cost? Which bus station (if there are more than one)? Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.

You can take a taxi which will cost around $25.

You can take a bus which will be around $1.

There are taxis waiting outside the airport and just before you exit, a nice gentleman will ask you, "Taxi?" Just say yes and he will escort you to a waiting, official airport taxi. The taxi will accept dollars or colones.

If you want to take the bus, exit the airport and walk across the street towards the parking garage. Turn left and follow that sidewalk up to the street. Look to your right and you will see bus stops. Go there. The red Tuasa buses travel very frequently between Alajuela and San Jose. You will pay the driver in colones. You can get colones from an ATM before you exit the airport. Once you are at the Tuasa bus station in San Jose, grab a taxi for the bus station for Quepos.

Thanks for the quick reply. Which bus station has buses going from San Jose to Quepos? Is it the Coca Cola one? i.e. what do I tell the taxi driver.

Also, how does one deal with luggage on the buses? I've heard that theft is pretty prevalent in CR, so I don't know what you're supposed to do with your luggage on a bus.

Tell the taxi driver you want the bus for Quepos. He will take you to the correct station.

There is a storage compartment underneath the bus. Put your luggage in there - most companies will give you a ticket/receipt. If you have more than one bag, bring a small bicycle lock and lock them together. This will prevent any "snatch and run" kind of theft - not common but can happen. Otherwise, sit on the side of the bus opposite the driver and you can see when the compartment is opened at bus stops.

It's a good idea to put most of your cash, your cards and your passport in a money belt. Don't put anything in the overhead bins. Put your "valuables" in a daypack and keep it with you all the time. If you go to sleep, turn your backpack so the zippers are towards your body.

You probably won't have any problems - but just some common sense suggestions.

Remember to always ask for the rate before getting on a taxi to avoid misunderstandings. The bus is the cheapest and takes like 25 minutes to get to San Jose, once you're there, a cap will charge you around $4 to $5 to take you to the quepos bus station.

The bus station for Manuel Antonio is called Tracopa. The buses used to leave from the Coca Cola - but is not longer.

An official airport cab will cost about $30. On our last few trips we have taken the bus into San Jose and then a cab to Tracopa.

Learn something new everyday. I thought the Quepos bus still ran from the Coca Cola. It's been a while.

If you take the bus from the airport to San Jose, there is no storage compartment on that bus. There might be an area on the bus where there are no seats and you can put your luggage there. Otherwise, you just have to put it on the floor next to you. Find an empty row and use one seat for you and one seat for your luggage.
