Tahiti airport foreign exchange

Please note that there's NO MORE foreign exchange at the Tahiti Int'l airport for incoming and outgoing flights.

The agency has been closed permanently.

For those arriving early morning or during day... there's a Banque de Socredo agency located to the right (next to the Air Tahiti office) when standing with your back to the snack. This agency has ATM machine, an exchange machine outside in the wall and offers exhange inside. The ageny is open during regular office hours

WOW! This news sucks. First they no longer take travelers checks and now they no longer exist at all???

Okay...so the bad things about having to use the ATM or exchange machines is they can be unreliable and often run out of money....AND they probably wouldn't be useful for exchanging large amounts of money.

So those of you traveling soon may wish to exchange money at home...at a much worse exchange rate. OR...wait until you can get to a bank on one of the islands or your hotel desk.

Poehere, you may wish to also post this in the individual forums. Many do not read the main forum...only the specific island one. So...the Papeete Bora Bora, Moorea, and French Polynesia forums might be good places to also post this information.

I just called a supervisor at ATN. She said that the bank is open M-F 8AM - 6PM & Saturdays 8AM - 12 NOON.

Because of the exchange desk not being open the bank is paying attention to the ATM machine to ensure there is money in the machine when the bank is closed.

Just wondering, why wouldn't you change some cash into Pacific francs at your local bank before you leave home ?

It's too bad it isn't open until 8am. We found out about the closure after our arrival around 6 am. We did manage to exchange a bit of CFP at home before we left, but we ended up paying the rest of the excursions and shopping costs with US dollars.

Just arrived in Tahiti this morning. Was surprised to see the bank closed. Ended up using the atm to take out a bit of cash. Went into downtown Papeete. and visited a bank. They exchanged $1USD for about 80XPF, but charged $14USD for each exchange.

Went back to airport later in the afternoon and visited the other exchange place. They also exchanged for about 1 to 80, but only charged about $7USD for an exchange.

So take that into consideration before coming.

I always purchase foreign currency before I leave home to have in hand upon arrival so there is no scambling around to find a bank or an ATM no matter what time it is.

If you want to order CFP from your local bank you need to do it way ahead of time. My local bank here doesn't even order them. You can however order them from american express. I am sure somebody here on this forum knows where in LA at the airport you can get CFP.
