Types of fish available to purchase??

I have read that fish is available at the markets but no one has mentioned what type of fish? We are planning to cook in our bungalow and it would be helpful to know what is available, so we can kind of plan on what spices/recipes to plan for. If anyone has any fish recipes to share that would be great!!

I know we found fresh Tuna a lot of places. And some white fish, I think maybe Mahi Mahi, but honestly don't remember for sure. We purchased from a fish market (small garage type building) a bit north of the Linareva, and they also had marinades to use for the fish. We also purchased frozen shrimp at the grocery store by the ferry dock and used italian dressing as a marinade. If you think you'll want to grill shrimp you may want to take your own skewers as we had a hard time finding some, and then of course there were way more in the package than we needed.

You can buy tuna red (thon rouge) white (thon blanc)and Mahi mahi in the markets most of the time. We buy our spices from www.penzeys.com as they sell all of their spices in 1/2 sized jars. We eat the red

tuna raw sliced very thin with wasabi and soy sauce

or seared very lightly in butter and still uncooked in the middle. We cook mahi mahi a little more than we do tuna. We never buy fish on the roadside as we

don't know how long ago it was caught.

Ia orana

Market places would have mainly Tuna, Mahi Mahi and what ever the boat brought in. Also consider on thursdays on Moorea the fresh chevrettes (soft water shrimps). You can visit the fish market of Pao pao ( next to honu iti restaurant for one of your shopping options or the fish shop just before maharepa ( comping from Cooks bay). You will find on the side of the road the local catch from the fishermen. You can't do any fresher than that.

The visual treat is to go at the central market in Papeete on an early Sunday morning.

Hope this helps

If you are brave enough to buy fish from the side of the road make darn sure the eyes are very bright. You never know how long ago they were caught or how long they have been hanging in the rack without any

refrigeration.

What are soft water shrimp? How are they different than other shrimp? Is it the shell or the taste? Thanks.

The shrimp raised in ponds at the head of Opunohu

Bay are raised in SALT water. They taste just like

other shrimp only fresher.

Via Meherio is a day late. They sell fresh shrimp

in one kilo net bags will the heads still on

Wednesday morning after 10pm. Go to the head of Opunohu Bay and turn on the road to Belvedere. You will see the ponds and the buildings of the shrimp farm

They sell them at the farm. We always dehead them and then put them in the frig for a few hours before

peeling off the shells and deveining them.
