Availability of Food for Self Catering in Aitutaki

We are going to Aitutaki for a few days in April this year and were wanting to know what the availablity of food is like there for purposes of self catering. We would like to know if there is a local shop that sells milk, fish, bread and fruit and veges. We plan to take some prepackaged meals but need to be able to buy a few staples also. Also is there any other restaurants other than the resorts where we could get a meal? Also is scooter hire an option in Aitutaki like Rarotonga and if so any recommendations? We have a valid Cook Island license from last year. Any helpful replies apprecitated!

Kia Orana Edward, There are several stores on Aitutaki you can shop at. The selection isn't as great as on Rarotonga but I think you will be able to find what you are looking for. Fresh fruit and veges are not as available as on Rarotonga but if you shop around you may find some local produce. Several stores have fruit and veges shipped in from NZ but they priced accordingly.

As far a restaurants go, there is the Koru Cafe for breakfasts and lunch, the Boat Shed for lunch and dinner, Tupunas for dinner, Taono's Cafe and several small 'takeaways' scattered around the island as well as restaurants at the Pacific Resort, Tamanu Beach Resort, Samade on the Beach and the Aitutaki Lagoon Resort.

If you go to the following link there is an article about shopping :

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g309706-s405/Aitutaki…

There are several car and motorbike rentals on the island: Rino's Rentals near the main part of the island, Popoara Rentals at the south end of the runway, Ranginui Rentals near Samade on the Beach resort and Aquilla Rentals near the Pacific Resort. Bicycle rentals are not that readily available but you may find some. If you are on Aitutaki for any length of time, inquire about discounts. Many rentals will give you 7 days for the price of 6.

Hope all this helps.

Hi Edward,

We were in the cook Islands in 2011 and going back in just 2 months!! I am sure you will fall in love with Aitutaki like we did.

Make sure you visit Sonja and her beautiful organic garden and cafe (Tauono's Cafe). She makes the most delicious coconut cake and sells organic fruit and vegetables and homemade bread. Tauano's in on the West side of the Islands, very closed to Tamanu Beach Resort.

Hope you have a good one!!

Thank you! We are staying on the west side of the island so we will be sure to visit the cafe. Will make a note of it.

Yes we both love the Cook Islands as well. This year is our 6th visit in as many years! Only our second visit to Aitutaki though. Really looking forward to it again.
