Fabric

Kia Orana!

I'm traveling to Raro and love the fabric that is used to make the bed covers. Can anyone tell me where to buy the fabric?

I purchased some fabric when I was in Aitutaki but didn't see any on the bolt in Raro so I must have been looking in the wrong place. Thanks for your help!

Hi HappyHaunts,

Azlin fabric is only sold at Vonnia's on Rarotonga. Either visit Vonnia's Warehouse located near Prime Foods in Avarua, or Vonnia's west located near RitePrice grocery store in Arorangi. The main colours are sold off the bolt. You can possibly pick up ends of a run, in a small piece, at a cheaper price.

It's been a while since I had a really good browse around Vonnia's on Aitutaki, but her former and smaller shop sold Azlin, hopefully her bigger store located in town still does as well. Mango Traders on Aitutaki, near Pacific Resort, may have Azlin?

Azlin is fairly difficult to come by in NZ even. Ensure you get more than you require when you are here. Incidentally fabric in the Cook Islands is still sold by the yard, and comparatively cheap compared to other fabrics.

Happy quilting!

Thank you so much! I was so happy when I found the store on Aitutaki but I'm only going to Raro this trip so I can't wait to see what is in stock!

I agree with you. On our last visit we brought 1 of the duvet covers with the large flowers. Got it at the main store in Avarua in their bedding department. Cost a bit though but worth it. We're heading over in October and I'll be buying another 1 if they are in stock. Sometimes its pot luck. Sue

I bought some fabric in Vonnias to make a Cook Island quilt which is called a tivaevae and if you are lucky you will find a lady called Ina in the market who will cut it out for you and show you how to stitch it. I am still in the process of hand stitching mine and am really loving it. The fabric is very much cheaper than here in the UK and thread is also very cheap - a whole box of thread cost me only $5!

If you are really interested in the traditional quilts which are so beautiful, the book shop sells a lovely book and also there is different one available on Amazon by a lady who l believe lives on Raro called Lindsay Rokokae ( I think that is her name) and this one is very good too.

The fabric colours are amazing and the fabric is well priced and its great to be able to sew one by hand. The ones bought in the main town are generally machine stitched but still very pretty.

As well as Vonnias which is up a side road in town next to Prime Foods the butchery shop, also have a look at "Tukis" which is on the beach side of the road just as you have heading out of town towards Muri - they also sell fabric.

Tuki's stopped selling fabric for Tivaevae quilting some time ago. I will contact this store today to see if they have decided to enter the azlin market again. Tuki's shop specialises in pareu fabric/island prints; having the biggest range on the island.

Whereas Vonnia's specialises in azlin for quilting, along with embroidery threads.

You can buy them in the shops in Avarua. I bought one and want more, but can't find any online.
