We usually stay at Sunhaven Beach Bungalows, fantastic place, great sunsets, adults only. We walk a few minutes on the beach towards Aroa Beachside Inn, great snorkelling spot right in front and they have a lovely little bar called Shipwreck Hut just in case you get thirsty. Otherwise we hop on a scooter and go to Fruits of Rarotonga for the best snorkelling but anywhere around Aroa and Titikaveka areas is good, just beware of the passages (gaps in the reef, very strong currents).

The Sunset Resort is very close to a marine reserve sited alongside the Edgewater Resort so you could stay there for this reason as well as the Sunset being a very nice property with licenced restaurant, bars and 2 pools. Alternative snorkelling sites at Black Rock which is a short beach stroll from Sunset Resort.

Along the southern shores, both Tikioki marine reserve and Aroa marine reserve both offer good snorkelling. Tikioki has the edge with its greater abundance of fishlife and best swimming spot on Raro.

Sunhaven is another nice property, and it has a guests only pool. Very nice locality of Raro, just not as convenient to dining spots as Sunset enjoys.

Kia Orana Sharon,

I'd agree with Frangipani. Tikioki is the best loctaion (Fruits of Rarotonga). There's imformation on snorkelling places on www.snorkelrarotonga.com

There are several reef passages along the southern lagoon, and also the expanded passage for the new jetty in Arorangi aren't safe for people who don't know the prevailing sea conditions within these areas. There are some large sign-boards found in/around these deep-water localities explaining about the associated risks. Remain away from the passages (deep blue in colour with a fast flowing tide) and you'll be fine.

Tikioki, Aroa, Arorangi and Black Rock marine reserves are all safe areas of the lagoon. Without knowing your accommodation budget, I can only advise that there is a range of good accommodation choices around Tikioki including in the wider area of Titikaveka village, but also towards Muri village heading east..

If you are considering staying at a larger property, Moana Sands in Titikaveka has a licenced restaurant-bar on site, or Royal Takitumu villas in Titikaveka may appeal? Both are adjacent to very nice swimming, with Moana Sands being closer to Tikioki marine reserve. Combined with these are a number of self-catering holiday villas on the beach and inland sides of the main road in close proximity to Tikioki marine reserve.
