best area to stay in

Hi -we ( 2 adults) are hoping to spend 6 or 7 nights in Rarotonga late next february. Last time we went there ( in 2000 ) we stayed at the Puaikura lodge, which was good but remember there was only one restaurant within an easy walking distance. We plan on eating out most of the time, so would like self contained accommodation with a pool, near a few restaurants+ near the beach.

Last time we remember getting the bus on the friday or sat night to the town, + the bus dropped everyone at whatever bar/restaurant we wanted. Will be hiring a motor bike for the daytime but like a few beers/ wines at night!

Kia Orana microsh, welcome to the forum.

Are you considering staying in the same area of Raro this visit? In the heart of Arorangi, several places that are within walking distance to dining include Sunset Resort, Magic Reef, Coral Sands, Castaway Resort. At the end of Arorangi is Sunhaven Villas.

In the Kavera area you'll find Lagoon Breeze Lodges - handy to Cocoputt Alehouse, Kaena and the Rarotongan Resort. Highland Paradise offers regular cultural evenings, and is located in the hills inland from Sunhaven. Guest transfers can be arranged.

The buses continue to operate in a clockwise fashion at night, and ironically the genuine Whatever! bar is a popular spot for ocean views and affordable fast-meals. This place may not have existed in 2000? Think it opened a couple years later maybe, but a good spot for a beer and entertainment all the same.

You'll notice many changes over the past 14 years when you visit! All the best with your plans.

Kia manuia.

Thanks for that-- Have looked at all accommodation you mentioned and other than Coral Sands, they are all above our budget. We are on a 6 - 7 week holiday, so not looking for anything too expensive. Will also have 3 nights in Aitutaki which am sure is not cheap!

Hi microsh, there is a wide variety of accommodations on Aitutaki. Here is a web site that lists almost all of them and you can search it by price:

aitutaki-accommodations.com/Aitutaki_Accommo…

If you have any questions about any specific ones, just ask.

Hi again,

Have a look at Cooks Oasis which is located at the northern end of Arorangi near Black Rock beach. All units are self contained, there's a small pool and games room and the complex is located just back from the beachfront. Very nice area of the island with good snorkelling in the marine reserve adjacent to the Edgewater - 5 minutes walk south, but also to Black Rock beach immediately north of the property.

Wonderful dining options within close proximity to Cooks Oasis. About 7 - 10 minutes to town. Is this the type of accommodation and around the price range you are looking for?

For 2 - 3 nights on Aitutaki, I suggest you contact one of the local travel centres based on Rarotonga who offer packages including transfers, return flights and accommodation. Try Jetsave Travel; Island Hopper Vacations and Air Raro travel centre who sell these deals.
