Must do Activities in March besides skiing

Going to Alaska and staying at Alyeska Resort first week of MArch to ski. We want to see some of the best sites of Alaska while we're there. They are not operating the Glacier Cruise until the end of March. Bummer, really want to see a glacier. Also, the Company that runs the Dog Sled Tour from the resort is closed for business. The other Dog Sled Tour is out of Steward - 2 hrs away. Anyone know of another Dog Sled Tour company closer to the Resort? Has anyone done the Snowmobile Tour? Open to suggestions for MUST SEE tours. Thank you in advance.

Will you have a rental car? That'll be a big key in what activities you can or can not get to...

And just for fun, here's a few pictures I took in that area just yesterday...

Glacier...

If you snow shoes and transportation you could take a short drive south and hike into Byron Glacier (check avalanche reports).

You could head through the tunnel at Whittier and take a walk around Whittier (maybe have a meal)

Which snowmobile tour?

Glacier City Snow Mobile Tours. It's the company the Resort uses. http://www.snowtours.net/winter.html It sounds like fun. The ski club I'm going with is doing a full day tour visiting Portage Glacier Valley and then spending 4 hrs in Steward allowing time to visit Alaska Sealife Museum and Alaska Wildlife Museum. I'm not very fond of museums. Not sure if I'm brave enough to take a helicopter tour over a glacier. It's also really expensive. $345 for one hour. Yikes.

"Alaska Sealife Museum and Alaska Wildlife Museum"

I think you mean the Alaska Sealife Center and the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. These aren't museums... See the links for more details:

We will be in Anchorage on March 2 for the Iditarod ceremony. Looking forward to that. We are now discussing renting a car to increase our options.

Besides the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in Anchorage, the actual restart is fun out on the lake at Willow. There are shuttles from Millenium Hotel in Anchorage for which one needs reservations.

Dress warmly for any of the Iditarod events!

Without a car, you could book a sled dog mushing tour with Salmon Berry Tours. They will come pick you up, take you to the mushing kennel (most like up in Willow) and bring you back. It's a full day (I've done it from Anchorage) and well worth it, especially if you do not have your own vehicle/transportation.

Thank you. I called Salmon Berry Tours. They don't p/u at the hotel for free. They're charging us $50p/p extra for the transfer. That's $250 95 persons) from Gridwood to Anchorage and return. Probably chaeaper to rent a car for the day. Does anyone know of a Dog Sled company that will p/u from Alyeska Resort?
