Timing for a Haines revisit

Back from a great trip late August via Alaska Ferries to Haines and planned largely around Trip Advisor advice (thanks Mombear and others).

We'd like to go back in 2014 but would like to go earlier in the season, maybe while there is still more snow around on the peaks, yet still be in Haines when the bears are fishing on the Chilkoot.

Is first week or two of July too early for bears? what about 3rd week of June?

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Haines, Hal....... Did you get a chance to see bears while you were in town ?

Other than the glaciers, the snow on the peaks around Haines is usually melted off by June, but the bears are most often seen starting in mid July.......

Looking forward to reading your trip report !

Thanks for the information and yes Mombear we achieved our main goal of seeing plenty of bears fishing the salmon run (third week of August). Your tips re heading to Haines and then staying out at Chilkoot River made for the the highlight of our 5 weeks of travel and we spent our days out there watching and photographing bears much of the time.

I spoke to a delighted fellow bear enthusiast (she was from Germany) on her second last day in Alaska. She had been travelling further north for 4 weeks (including Denali) doing lots of driving and wilderness hiking, had not seen one bear till she got to Chilkoot River and now she was watching several all at once!

Our other top highlights were the Tracy Arm day cruise with Adventure bound out of Juneau, some close interaction with Black bears up at Mendenhall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZlRiFUHke8) and the whole of the trip up from Bellingham with Alaska ferries. The drive up the Chilkat River valley on the drive to Whitehorse was pretty neat too though we were too early in the season to catch much of those magic foliage colours.
