Any hiking/walking/photography group in Haines?

we are going to be visiting Haines for the second time in June of this year. I have been scouring trip advisor for lots of information, thanks to all, especially Mombear, for the great information. When we visit I would like to do some light hiking, like the battery point trail etc, but my travelling companion is not up to hiking. I am not brave enough, and I don't think it is wise, to go off my my own. I am not experienced with bears etc and am a little chicken. Is there any walking or photography group/tours in the area that meet who allow people to join in on their walks? Any suggestions on how to get around this. Or, am I being overly concerned, and it is reasonable to got on short hikes on ones own. Don't want to be one of those tourists who makes the news for the wrong reasons ;)

There are a few hiking groups, not really organized, just sort of spur of the moment types......

I would not hesitate hiking the Battery Point trail on my own.....it is a very popular trail and there are always locals on the trail.....just hang around at the parking lot there until the next group arrives.....introduce yourself and ask if you might join their group......

Even if the group is one of those who speed hike (yep, this old bear has been passed by on many occasions) you will be very safe on the trail, even if you are left to hike at your own speed......

Once you are in town, check the local newspaper, it is printed once a week and on the second page there is a calendar of events, where any group hikes will be listed......

Other than that there are several commercial groups who will do customized hiking tours for you......our neighbors work for Rainbow Glacier Adventures, and we have seen them out and about conducting hiking tours.....the company hires specialists in photography, flora and fauna......

Thanks so much, Mombear. That is exactly what I wanted to know. I will check the paper when we arrive, if I am lucky, there will be something scheduled. If not, I feel more comfortable about the Battery Point Trail on my own. I do like to go slow as I stop to take a lot of photos. Maybe I am better off on my own anyways. What about walking trails in Chilkoot park on my own? thank again.

Not any trails out near Chilkoot Lake, just fishing trails down by the river......there are some great photo ops out that way.......you probably have been out there on your last trip and know that there are lots of eagles out there and sometimes seals swim up into the river at high tide......there are some meandering trails through the meadows there where the river empties into the ocean.......

Another great place to walk is along the beach on the ChilKAT River side of the peninsula.......park where River Road meets Mud Bay Road and there are lots of trails that branch our along the gravel beach with great wide open views......you can even walk River Road up till the end and connect with a trail on the beach that continues on for another half mile or so.....once you get past that last house on River Road you feel like your all alone in your own wilderness......lots of wildflowers out where the trail ends.........

We did go out to Chilkoot several times when we were there, we saw bears every time, we visited in August. Do you think there is the possibility of seeing them this time at the end of June?. It was the hilight of our trip. We didn't make it to the chilkat side which you mention, even though it was on my to so list. We plan to go there this time,

I have one other question, since we will be there just after the Summer Solstice, what is the light like? As a southerner, it is hard to imagine 24hour daylight. Is it really like that or will there be a sunset to sunrise, even briefly? Just wondering. Thanks again.

It will be dusky, but still light enough to see at midnight, starting to get light again around 4 in the morning........

The bears will be out foraging in June, not at the Chilkoot River since the salmon will not be running by then......I have seen them in May or June in meadow areas eating dandelions or clover, sometimes on the beach eating seaweed.........

Since your traveling partner does not hike, I would include a trip to ChilKAT State Park in your plans......you can drive right down to the ranger's log cabin there and enjoy the glacier view from the back deck......if the summer caretaker is there, he usually has a spotting scope and several plant and bird guides and will answer any of your questions.......

There is a big bicycle race every June from Yukon to Haines......this year it will be 6-21.......the town will be full of participants......many camping on the parade grounds at Fort Seward...... http://kcibr.org/

If you are planning on being in Haines during that time frame, I suggest you book your lodging soon.....with so many folks in town, there are often a few fund raising breakfast or dinners also.........

Hi Mombear - your suggestions sound wonderful! My husband and I will be in Haines August 4-6 and the 5th is a free day for us. We will have a rental car and would like to know if there are any 'ghost towns' to photograph. Thank you
