transport to Mendenhall Glacier

We are a party of six. I have read here about the MTG blue bus @ $16/person roundtrip. Would sharing the cost of a taxi be cheaper? And are taxi's plentiful at the pier?

Are you on a cruise?

Taxi would certainly be cheaper and you can get a minivan taxi. But even cheaper and more flexible yet would probably be a one-day car rental with Rent A Wreck. Something like $75/day plus gas. And it gives you lots of flexibility to explore other areas too.

as FTI mentioned, getting your own car would be an easier option.... you really can't get lost going to the glacier, and afterwards you can hop down to Auke Rec and have a lil bbq along the bay, or go over to Tee Harbor/Lena Point and go whale watching from shore.

Thanks for that info...hadn't thought about a car. Since our ship does not arrive until 2:30, we were a little concerned that MTG would not be running when we wanted to leave Mendenhall. Renting a car sounds like a good option.

Reserve in advance.......Rent a Wreck is the only car rental that will deliver to the dock and will save you a taxi ride to the airport where the other car rental are located........Do a search in Juneau for ideas of other places to visit with a car (Eagle Beach, Shrine of St Terese, salmon run at Sheep Creek) and come back to the forum with any other questions you have......

DiverDown - You mentioned the possibility of whale watching from the shore at Tee Harbor/Lena Point. Can you tell me where this is? We will be in Juneau in mid-June for the day, and might have access to a car. Are the chances of seeing a whale from there good or rather remote? Thanks!

Just keep following the main road until you are past the ferry terminal. There are a number of turn-offs where you can park & pull out your binoculars. Tee Harbor & Lena Point are just two areas you can see *some* type of marine life from the highway. Personally you should continue up past Eagle Beach(Mile 27) to around Mile Marker 34ish - Sunshine Beach Cove (its not marked, but just look for a portapotty alongside the road). Its a very short hike down to the beach - or you can stay up on the "bluff" and whale watch from there.

mile markers = distance from downtown wharf.

Just to warn you, please be careful when driving on Glacier Highway past Eagle Beach (mile marker 26). We just had another young fatality last night (alcohol was involved) at mile marker 32 - I was unfortunately on the OTHER side of this crash and saw its aftermath as the emergency crews were arriving. (and had to wait until almost 2AM to get back to town..)

the road is very bumpy & there are no shoulders along part of it - don't be afraid to slow down if you need to.

but we did see 4 or 5 bears along the road & lots of wildlife out at berners bay from Point Bridget!

Another great spot to watch for whales is from the Boy Scout Camp beach near Eagle Beach State Recreation Area, or from the beach at the Recreation Area itself. If the weather is calm and quiet, you can hear (and see) whale spouts from miles away.

I checked and it looked like a good deal to rent a van for the 6 of us , instead of taking the bus or ship tour. We are going to the glacier, then sightseeing at some of the spots mentioned. Or should we go the sightseeing of other spots first, then the glaicer? any opinions?
