Cost of taxi from Juneau to Mendenhall.

We are a party of 2 (husband and wife 50s) travelling with Princess cruises. Want to fit in as much as possible on Alaskan cruise. We arrive at 8am in Juneau and sale at 9pm. Plan at Juneau is Mendenhall Glacier, hike to Nugget Falls, back to town, lunch, ride Mount Roberts Tramway if not foggy, whale watch evening trip 5-8.30 (this is booked through cruise line as late trip -we sail at 9pm)

As the blue buses don't start running until 9am to Mendenhall (I believe) we are considering catching a taxi there to make the best use of our time and get there early before the crowds. Does anyone know the current taxi costs and whether we should book a taxi in advance or whether we can just pick one up quickly and easily when we get off the ship? We think there may be a number of touts for our business but don't want to get confused by the selection and want to walk straight to a taxi to maximise time. Does anyone have any recommendations which firm to use / contact details? Any comments on the feasibility of our intentions and time scales involved?

If all you are doing before lunch is Mendenhall Glacier I don't see the big rush to get there early. However there is lots to see and do in that area. Have you considered renting a car? That by far would be the best way to maximize your time. After Mendenhall you can drive past Auke Bay for great views m, St. Therese and more.

Driving on the other side of the road is really not as hard as you might think.

As a rough guide, last June, a taxi from our downtown hotel to Auke Bay (we were leaving Juneau by ferry) cost $36 for the two of us.

Just an observation: although your ship arrives at 8 a.m. you may not disembark until much later. Some of the ships anchor off shore and use tenders to transport passengers to the quayside.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, usually you can start disembarking at the time the ship says is the port arrival time. If the OP is on a ship that tenders, the tendering should start close to the 8am time. Most Princess ships that I see in Juneau are docked - usually at the more-distant AJ dock.

Thanks everyone for their help. Idea was to get to Mendenhall as early as possible to beat the crowds so we are always one step ahead. As there are only 2 of us the cost of taxi would be about twice as much as that of bus (I think); I suppose if we hook up with someone else this would bring cost down, but we may have different ideas of how long to spend there so could always get the bus back. It is the blue bus that stops nearest isn't it? Anyone know as per original question whether there is a taxi rank close to where ships dock?

Since you don't say which ship or date, I don't know which dock your ship will be using.

There are taxis near all the docks, but one company has paid extra to be inside the two docks that Princess uses, and the closest discount busses are not at those docks. Taxis all charge the same rates, but not all drivers are good tour guides. A couple of minutes talking to drivers inside and outside the dock gates should help you decide which driver you want to use.

If you can get others to join you in sharing a taxi, it will be cheaper than the two discount bus lines (blue or white) if you have 5 or more (some vans hold as many as 10). The fare to the glacier is about $35 + $1.50 per person TO the glacier, and about $35 coming back.
