Ideas for 2 week Kenai/Lake Clark Nat'l Park June 2010

We spent 3 weeks in Alaska last June & July and fell in love with it - photos online at

http://www.tinyurl.com/beatonalaska

We're going to return for two weeks in late June with 2 adults and two children ages 10 and 12 and are planning roughly

3 nights Seward

(stayed at Holiday Inn Express last year)

would like recommendations of other lodging there

7 nights Kenai River Fishing based at

A Wandering Moose - Soldatna

and Kenai Princess Lodge - Cooper Landing

4 nights at Alaska Homestead Lodge

Lake Clark National Park

We have lots of flexibility and options but would love input from some of you destination experts!

Well, the 1st run of red salmon up the Russian River is historically right around the solstice. We often see brown & black bears down fishing right with the fishermen on the Russian River. You can always get a parking pass to drive into the Russian RIver Campground all the way to the parking lot to the stairs/boardwalk down to the confluence (of the Russian & Kenai Rivers) for a look- & walk the boardwalk for a look for bears & to see the combat fishing.

That first run is also a good time to walk the 2 miles to Russian River Falls to watch the salmon go up the falls & maybe see some fishing bears. You can get a pass for that parking lot too.

In Seward take the longest day cruise you possibly can out to see the puffins and other sea life, plus the glaciers.

Denalicat,

Do you get the parking pass when you go to the campground, or in advance? Do they limit the number of passes given in a day? I did look online and did not find this info. Thanks

Last year we did a shorter cruise with Kenai Fjords but would love to do something longer - aren't there several tour operators out of Seward? Any advice on choosing one over another?

If you go to the Seward page, there is a Top Question regarding day cruises out of Seward to give you some general discussions. If you add your question there, hopefully we will get more input to that Top Question. Thanks for the help!

Suzieblue....

Folks get day passes at the entrance station.

The first parking is the trailhead parking, which is small & does fill up. Across the road is the trailhead overflow parking lot. I have seen both full at times. The trailhead is not only for Russian Falls, but backpackers use it to get to the 3 USFS cabins on the Russian Lakes trail. The trail actually goes from Hope, the Resurrection Pass Trail, to Russian Lakes Trail, to Resurrection River Trail all the way down to Seward. So it is backpackers' multi-day parking also.

Then there are 2 day pass fishing parking lots. The first is Pink Salmon Parking which is just passed the first campground loop, Red Salmon. There are stairs & boardwalk down to the river. The boardwalk runs the whole length of the campground & can be accessed from all the camp loops on the Russian River side. There is usually always over parking spaces at Pink Salmon.

The Grayling Parking lot is at the top of the campground & is the most popular, since it is access for fishermen to the confluence of the Russian & Kenai Rivers, & the best fishing spots. It is often packed full.
