Kerala to Goa by train?

Hello.

We are planning a 3 week trip to Kerala, staying in Kovalam and since we are there for 3 weeks we are thinking of going to Goa for a few days. Does anyone know anything on the train journey? I'm guessing we would take the train from Trivandrum. Can we book the train ticket when we get there?

Thanks.

There is a train on the western line that goes from Cochin in the evening and reaches around noon the next day I think. If you check the Indian Railways site you can easily get info.

There is only one Daily Train passing thru this route which are basically long distance Trains from Kerala to Mumbai or even further. The daily Train is 20hrs journey starts at 11.45pm and reaches Madgaon/Goa at 7.45pm next day.

There is another weekly twice Rajadhani Train on Mon. & Wed. starts Trivandrum at 2.50pm and reaches Madgaon at 9.30am next day i.e. approx 18hrs journey. If possible plan to travel by this Train as the fare includes all Food/Snacks and is a premium train.

Advance Reservation is a MUST this is a quite populated route all thru the year.

look on website http://www.indianrail.gov.in/index.html

click on trains between imp. stations you want the train from trivandrum ctrl to madgaon this will give you train times and prices.

once you have decided on train and time it is best to book in advance you can book online at http://www.irctc.co.in/

It is a long journey by train (although cheap) as the trains stop at most little stations on route. Might be an idea so look at internal flights, they are cheap as well. There is plenty to do in Kerala 3 weeks is not a long time to sightsee, you wont get bored. Ideas? wildlife parks, museum, waterfalls, hill station & tea plantation, backwaters, elephants, visit Cochin (just up from Allapy backwater trips There is plenty to keep you occupied without going to Goa, perhaps save that for another holiday.

we stayed in kovalam last november for the first time and got stuck for things to do. having been to goa twice before we missed the hustle and bustle, the markets and the beaches. we asked our tour rep if it was possible to fly to goa but she advised it was very expensive and indirect. so we went to a local travel agent who booked us onto the ragistan express first class. it cost around £30 per person return.. we had our own sleeper cabin with fold down bunk beds. we boarded the train in trivandrum around 6.30pm was served our evening meals and tea before bed time.

we woke to morning tea and breakfast then arrived in goa at around 10.30/ 11am. we hardly noticed the journey as we travelled while we slept. the return journey departed goa at about 1pm and arrived in travandrum about 5.30am. all the meals, snacks and bottled water was encluded in the price. it really was the highlight of our trip and would recommend it to anyone. we loved it. we were also able to get off the train when it stopped and managed to take some beautiful photos.
