Alcohol from duty free LAX...why can't I bring it from home?

Hello everyone...I keep hearing about buying alcohol from the duty free shop at LAX. Some say it's more expensive at duty free than buying from home. So my question is this...why can't I buy a bottle of vodka here at home, pack it really well in my suitcase, board the American Airline plane and proceed to fly to LAX then PPT then Bora Bora? This will be my first time carrying a bottle...

You can bring alcohol from home but it will have to be in checked baggage. I'm thinking most people try to do carry on only, that's our plan when we go.

Do some research on the internet. Some higher proof booze is not allowed. I made several PVC pipe

carry tubes with a solid bottom and screw cap top. I've never had a broken bottle yet.

clever, Hamara! I might have to steal that for our up-coming trip in September. Tho we mostly drink wine and we'd need to bring a case to satisfy....haha

Don't forget that packing alcohol in your checked bag adds weight and could put you over the limit. We prefer to buy liquor at Duty Free and count the bag as a carry on and they've never weighed it.

The alcohol at LAX Duty free is really not expensive, cheaper than a local liquor store in the US imo. Not sure it worth packing your own!

The selection at Duty Free is limited so some of us prefer to bring our favorite

brands. Ever try to buy Vermouth at Duty Free? IMO good booze outranks bringing clothes you don't need.

Does the duty free at LAX sell wine? or only liquor?

Hamara....lol!!! you said it! ;)

travelerpapillion: Yes they sell wine at lax duty free...however, there isn't a large selection and you can probably get something better for less $ at home. By the way, wine is relatively affordable in Tahiti...as is beer. It's the hard liquor that has jaw dropping prices.

shully,

Thanks. I just don't want to pack it in my checked baggage(though I have before). I will just pick up wine in BB/Moorea and pick up some liquor at LAX then.

good thinking... :) I should have mentioned the wine is relatively affordable in the markets.....not restaurants...but I think you understood that. Have a great trip! You must be getting really excited.
