Bears in Tok area

O.K. I would like the truth about bears !

Is it safe to camp around the Tok area and all of Alaska for that matter ?

We will be travelling by Motorcycle in the beginning of July, Top of the world Hwy, Tok and Haines to the Ferry.

So if a bear approaches, we cant just jump into our car........!

Yes, it is safe. At least for the vast majority of people. You are in far greater danger from the drivers up here, as you are anywhere on a motorcycle. We have plenty of happy cyclists up here who survive the drivers and gravel roads, and plenty of tent campers who survive the bears.

You can read up on standard precautions of cleanliness and food care, and if you want extra protection you can buy some bear spray (pepper spray) that is good for a range of about 10 meters. Just don't pre-apply it to you or your area. Old stuff acts a bit like cat nip according to one researcher's movies...

You should be quite safe in a campground........in every bear encounter I have had, the bear has done his best to avoid human contact........just cook well away from your tent, don't keep food (or toiletries) in your tent......lock up all food in the containers provided in the campground.......Travelling by motorcycle will give you front row seats to observe the wildlife......but I really can't imagine any approaching you.......
