what to do besides golf?

We like to ride bikes- on trails, but not on mountain trails. And we like hiking and shopping and sightseeing old towns, native reservations etc. Will we be bored in Carefree for two weeks in Feb?

Well, I'm no expert on Carefree (and besides, I dogo to Phoenix in February to play golf!), but it looks like there are several parks near by (Lake Pleasant Region Park, Cave Buttes Rec Area, Cave Creek Nature Area) plus the Tonto National Forest. I've never visited any of these sites, but a bet a little internet seraching will show you some details.

Also Sedona is only about 2 hours north of Carfree and there is plenty to see and do there. Going south, Scottsdale and Tempe offer shopping and sightseeing. You might have to do a little driving, but I bet you can keep yourselves entertained.

There are about a billion miles of bike trails in and around Phoenix (OK, maybe not a billion) but many, many miles. Google "bike trails Phoenix" and pick your favorite.

Happy biking, I love the Phoenix areas for biking!

The native reservations in the Phoenix area will be of little interest as their primary attractions are casinos, and not arts and crafts or their cultures. Reservations which you can visit and see things are in Northern Arizona, but understand that both the Hopi and Navajo are very private peoples, and you will not get much exposure to their daily lives. It's also a little cold in February up there.

Given your interests, I would be curious why stay in Carefree? Sedona will not be as warm but will offer far more related to your interests. The "old towns" which you can visit are also close to Sedona and not Carefree.

So unless you're really there for the golf, I think Carefree will either be boring, or you will be driving somewhere else every day.

Pinnacle Peak Hiking Trail is in N. Scottsdale not too far from where you will be. It's an interesting hike, probably moderate. You will be walking along some lovely home and I feel like I am spying on them, but that is where the trail is.

There is also a small museum in Carefree - http://cavecreekmuseum.com/ that will give you a little flavor of the area including some indian and cowboy memorabilia. Its open in the afternoons.

Cave Creek has a large Recreation area. -http://www.maricopa.gov/PARKS/CAVE_CREEK/

The Sears Kay Ruins is a nice hike and only about a mile long, but the ruins of the Hohokam Indian Village is very interesting.

Also not too far is McDowell Mountain Park which is between Rio Verde and Fountain Hills. They have wonderful trails for walking - we have done many of them - and of varying length and degree of difficulty. There are also many restroom areas. They also bike trails but I do think they are mountain bike.

Just a few suggestions.

Pinnacle Pk is a great trail, also check out the McDowell Sonoran Preserve on the link above.

I would drive up Interstate 17 to do some exploring in Prescott (Courthouse Square) and the town of Jerome for some great small town experiences and local history. You can spend a day in each town, an overnight in Prescott would work to save you some back and forth driving. Sedona is a great visit for natural beauty but is not really a "small town experience". On the east side of our valley is the tiny "town" of Tortilla Flat, near Canyon Lake, which is another good day trip from Carefree.

If you are interested in our native American history, visit the Heard Museum for sure, it is outstanding. Also while on I-17 stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument for some ancient ruins.

Tortilla flat would be at least an hour, probably 2 hours to drive to from Carefree. Not exactly close.

Out of all these opinions Az Fan has given you the best suggestions.. Carefree is away from the traffic and congestion of Scottsdale and Phoenix...To add browse around Cave Creek shops have lunch/dinner at El Encanto (great Mexican Restaurant)... explore Jerome (old mining town) for a day...Old Town Scottsdale for shopping....If you are looking for a relaxed outdoor type vacation away from it all then Carefree is an excellent choice
