Safari near Port Elizabeth

It was suggested that we begin our trip with a safari near P.E. How far from Jo'burg airport is P.E.? What would be the average cost for a safari for 2 nites, 3 days at a safari lodge in this area. Is there a shuttle bus or car service to take us to and from the airport to a safari lodge?

Thank you,

1050km from Joburg to PE

The cost is anything from R300 a day (self drive and excluding meals) to R6000 a day all inclusive.

The easiest way to get from Jo'burg down to PE is to fly - check out the fares / times on www.kulula.com as these are normally pretty reasonable. The flight time is just over 2 hours. Please however allow between 2-3 hours between the scheduled landing of your international flight and the departure of the domestic flight, as you will need to clear Customs and Immigration, collect your bags, walk the short distance from the Arrivals to the Departure terminal, and check in for the domestic flight. Better to allow more time rather than feeling rushed and worried on your first day of the holiday !!

If you choose to stay at one of the private safari lodges, they will meet you from your flight when you land at PE and take you by road to the reserve - costs start from around R850 per vehicle one way, and you can pay this directly to the lodge when you arrive. Time-wise, allow anything from one hour to 2 hours, depending on the lodge you decide on.

The cost really does depend on when you are planning to travel, PLUS a lot of the lodges are running special deals over this year.

Just to give you a ballpark idea tho of the published rates in a private game reserve / lodge :

Based on travelling in May :

Woodbury Tented Camp, Amakhala Game Reserve - their published rate is R1480 per person per night (plus offering Stay for 3, Pay for 2).

Kariega Main Lodge - their published rate is R2,100 per person per night (plus offering Stay for 3, Pay for 2).

Tree Tops, Lalibela Game Reserve - their published rate is R3,300 per person per night.

Bayethe Lodge, Shamwari Game Reserve - their published rate is R3,850 per person per night (plus offering 2 or 3 nights FREE in Cape Town / Winelands / Garden Route if you stay 2 nights at this lodge).
