1. Re: stop over

Hi

The main tourist areas are closer to the Kruger NP (e.g. Nelspruit) and the Panorama Route (e.g. Sabie). The towns in between like Middelburg, Witbank are not really tourist areas.

A really great place to stay, is in the Lydenberg area. There are loads of incredible guest houses and lodges in the area. Most people go there for the trout farming but is a really beautiful, quiet, quaint little town. Is not quite halfway on the route, closer to Hazyview than Johannesburg but if I had to break the journey, this is definitely the town I would choose. Just google Lydenburg accomodation for some suggestions.

Witbank indeed doesn't offer much.

Agree with Lydenburg or if you want to get a bit closer to JHB then Waterval Boven, Waterval Onder or (my personal preferance) Dullstroom.

Try Dullstroom - roughly the middle between Hazyview and Jhb Intl - try critchley hackle lodge or walkersons (beautiful) - between lydenburg and dullstroom

It isn't necessary to stop overnight as it is an easy 5 hour drive. However if you just fancy an overnighter then I second the previous suggestion, Dullstroom. Have stayed a couple of times at Critchley Hackle, lovely place. Themed on a scottish lodge, the staff even wear kilts to serve dinner, and set round a trout lake.
