How safe is Johannesburg now for the tourist?

I would appreciate an honest reply from people who have been here recently.

Is johannesburg worth a visit or best to avoid?

Thank you for your comments.

Honestly? It's definitely worth a visit, but you have to be really careful.

the things that make it worth visiting take a little planning. You can, of course, cruise around the sterile shopping malls of the northern suburbs, but if you're already travelling internationally, that may seem a waste of time. the things that make the place wonderful are the streets and the people. It's a buzzing city, with a wonderful diversity, and energy, but not on the main tourist effortless path.

Norwood is a great little neighbourhood, where there are lotsof lovely restaurants, yet it's not touristy - the people eating out are Joburgers. SOweto, in my opinion, is place you really should try to visit if you're interested in the country for its own sake, not just for the experience of having fun in the sun there.

I'll stop rambling on, sorry. I just love Jozi - it's a wonderful vibrant city, and you should try to connect with it, but do plan it - take care and time and do the research. It's worth it.

Of course you must visit Johannesburg - the people are really friendly, the place is buzzing.

There's always plenty to do whether you want to take a tour of Soweto, visit Gold Reef City or the Apartheid Museum, take in a movie or see a live show.

As for eating out, as the other post said, Norwood is a lovely little place -haven't been there at night for a few years, but the streets are lined with restaurants as well as Melville - very busy area. There's nothing wrong with eating out in Sandton either - in Sandton Square (situated inside Sandton City) you'll find most restaurants full.

Hi

I think Joburg is worth a visit....I have been there several times since my wife was born and raised there. The last time we went to Joburg was in December last year and we got a chance to visit the Apartheid museum, Constituition Hill, Soweto etc. I have made a trip report that I have posted on my personal homepage but I can't post the link here due to forum guidelines. But feel free to send me a mail on gardkarlsen@hotmail.com and I'll give you the link. I have been to Joburg several times and I have never really experienced any crime there...but I know lots of people that have experienced all sorts of things. You have to be careful like you would be careful in any other big city around the world....well, apart from Tokyo I guess :-)

Are you going to Cape Town? Or on a safari?

Regards

Thank you hemikiwi for asking the question.

I'm going to Jo'burg in a few weeks for business. I've been quite put off by some of the things people have said to me about the place and the lack of security. Being a woman, travelling with another woman, safety is a big issue for us.

We'll be staying in Sandton and will be escorted by local contacts for the entire stay so hopefully we should be ok.

Can anyone offer anything specific about what to avoid... e.g. is it safe to use a mobile phone in the street? Carry a handbag? Dress for business? Or should one try to dress down a bit - like I was advised when I visited Manila last year?

Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks in advance

Hi Mia,

Sandton is a really safe place to stay, even for a woman. You can use your cellphone, you can dress for business.

I've been there 3 times ( I'm from Holland ) and I never saw any crime. The places you have to avoid, is the same as in any big town, you see it, you feel it.

But the Sandton area is safe

Hi,

I live in Joburg (www.joburg.co.za) - for almost 10 years now.

Joburg is as safe as any major city. Yes, you get your criminal elements, but ... there are tips to take to heart when travelling (anywhere).

Don't flash money around.

Keep your purse close to you.

Never leave any valuables unattended.

Don't go out alone at night.

Don't take lifts from strangers.

... all the commensense things you do at home!

Thank you for your replies. I don't mean to offend anyone living in Jo'burg by posing the question. I just wanted some honest advice.

Thanks again

In my opinion visiting Johannesburg is pointless, as well as dangerous. It is a typical third-world city, full of dirt, poverty, crime, beggars, and traffic jams. There are a few noteworthy places such as the apartheid museum and gold mine museum, but the risks far outweigh the benefits.
