4/5 Days in Johannesburg

We have a possible cruise leaving from Capetown on December 4, 2010. Since our flight stops at Jburg to refuel, we are hoping to have a layover of 4 or 5 days here before continuing our flight on into Capetown.

I have used TA fervently in the past - getting help and advice for many trips. I know there is much research that we will have to do, and we will do it. I am not trying to get someone to do all our work for us! But..... I simply have no idea where to start. Africa is a new destination for us (except for Egypt in Jan 08) and as usual, we hope to get the biggest bang for our buck. We are budget travelers - retired educators - 70 & 73 and want to see all we can WHILE we can!

We are interested in the history, the culture, the art, music, the animals, the people, the food, the wine etc etc. Perhaps you might guide us to some postings where a similar trip has been planned in recent years.

Thanks for reading all the way through!

My ideal Joburg: One day outing to Cradle of Humankind, definitely see the Maropeng Centre there; if you want to see wildlife, day outing to the Rhino and Lion Park; see if the Parktown Heritage Foundation has any tours while you're there (www.parktownheritage.co.za) to see historical houses and hear about Joburg's mining history; half day walking tour around Newtown and visit the SAB Beer Museum; half day tour of Apartheid Museum and Gold Reef City (latter not recommended on weekends, it's a theme park and gets very crowded). Lastly don't miss sundowners on the pool deck at the Westcliff, best view in town, see if you can spot the elephants in the zoo below! Enjoy Joburg!

Hi Brahmama

It is somewhat unclear exactly what you are planning to do?

Do you arrive in Joburg 4/5 days before your cruise departs and is this 4/5 days all the time you have available apart from your cruise?

If this is the case then just connect directly on to Cape Town and spend the time around the Cape and it's region. With apologies to sunscreen and other Joburg residents you gat FAR more "bang for your tourist buck" in Cape Town, which is consistently placed in the World's top three cities for visitors, rather than staying in and around Johannesburg - possibly not in the world's top hundred cities!

You should really try to spend a minimum 4/5 days to explore the Cape, apart from any organised time with your cruise.

If, on the other hand you are already planning significant time in and around Cape Town, before or after your cruise. Then, with 4/5 days available, I would hire a car and head out east from Joburg to the Kruger National Park Area. About 5 hours drive, of which the last part is extremely scenic in the canyon and escarpment areas of the Northern end of the Drakensberg mountains. Then you should spend 3 days in Kruger National Park. This is one of the world's best (and certainly best managed) wildlife National Parks. The whole park is the size of the country of Israel so in 3 days you will see only a part. But if you haven't seen animals wild in the African Bush this is absolute "bang for your buck". And, despite what some people say, it doesn't have to be huge numbers of dollars. Yes, if you stay in the Ultra Luxury "Celebrity" Private Game Reserves outside Kruger Park then you can easily spend $3,000 a night as a couple. But drive yourself into Kruger staying in very comfortable Parks accommodation, in an airconditioned chalet with private bathroom for about $120 per night for the two of you. For budget travellers this is, IMO, one of the best tourism values in the world! At the end of this time drop your car at Kruger/Mpumulanga airport and take the direct flight to Cape Town.

So maybe a bit more information. Where do you arrive from and what is the broad schedule of your trip? What do you do after the cruise and when do you then leave South Africa? In the end maybe you are looking for 4/5 days in Joburg. In which case sunscreen's ideas seem about right.

What about a safari for a few days in Pilanesburg Reserve?
