Johannesburg hotel choices for a night

We have one night in Johannesburg before starting our safari in Botswana. I have limited our options to Davinchi, Westcliff and The Residence. Our safari company is arranging our pick up from the airport as well as a 2-3 hour tour of the city. Which hotel would you all recommend to spend the rest of the day in? Are restaurants and shoping in Sandton great and not to be missed? Or should we just relax in a nice hotel such as Westcliff?

No - not at all special and very miss-able.

It really depends on what you'd like to do after your tour. If you want to relax and just sit back and enjoy the view over Johannesburg and nothing else, then Westcliff is ideal.

If you'd rather have a more lively time, be in a slightly more vibey, active environment, then Da Vinci is an option. Da Vinci is new, opened just before World Cup, and has amazing black and white decor throughout. Also one plus with Da Vinci is that it's connected to Sandton City Mall, which has a link to the San Restaurant and Bar, which has a great bar with an awesome deck for some nice views over Sandton and beyond (and the live music and younger crowd doesn't hurt).

Another option for one night might the new Southern Sun Hotel at Hyde Park. It is adjacent to the Hyde Park Shopping Ctr, which is the most exclusive shopping centre in Joburg with some popular restaurants. You could have drinks at the popular hotel bar and then walk to dinner at any of the highly rated restaurants (reviews on www.eatout.co.za)

Thank you all. I forgot to mention that we'll be with our 8 year old son. Southern Sun looks very nice. I'll decide between Westcliff and it. I guess we can always take a cab down from Westcliff to the shopping areas of Hyde park and Sandton.
