Less than half a day in Joburg

Hi, we will be staying overnight at Johannesburg in between flights. We will be flying in from Zambia, arriving at 3PM. The next day, we have an international flight at 12NN.

Can we squeeze any sightseeing in between? Our initial plan was to simply stay at the airport and overnight there. If you have other suggestions, that would be welcome!

It will be my mom and I. We're not interested in night life. We'd like to see some historic sites/ museums.

Thanks in advance!

If your flight leaves at midday that means you'll have to check in by 10am? I don't think that will give you time to go anywhere, unfortunately. Assuming you are arriving and departing on weekdays, by the time you get out of the airport on your arrival day it will be closer to 4pm than 3; peak "hour" traffic will be in full swing; and to the best of my knowledge, museums etc will be closed by 5. The next morning, nothing will open before 8am at the earliest, and again there will be peak "hour" traffic to contend with. Unfortunately there is nothing within easy reach of the airport.

Sorry - not what you wanted to hear!

You can book a hotel in Sandton, close to the Gautrain station. You can then spend your evening getting a nice meal in one of the restaurants in Sandton, or close by as most of the Sandton hotels will have a shuttle service you can use.

That way you will see a small glimpse of Joburg, rather than just the airport.

The Gautrain will take you 15 mins between airport and Sandton.

Auntie and sepsep, thanks for your responses! We will look into Sandton but seems like overall, it would be more convenient just to stay inside the airport...

Thanks again for all the help!

Dont forget to have your Yellow fever shots.

Coming in from Zambia, you need proof that you have had a yellow fever shot.

Please don't stay inside the airport! That is beyond boring! Catch the Gautrain to Sandton, it takes 15 minutes each way. There are plenty of excellent restaurants in Sandton and the shopping is good. Athough Sandton is not the best way to discover Joburg it is a safe part of town and so much better than staying at the airport. Give Joburg a chance. The area around the airport is the least attractive part of the city.
