staying in Melville with children--is it advisable?

I was getting ready to book a guest house in Melville when a local told me to most definitely stay away, particularly as I am traveling with three kids. She described it as "seedy." This is contrary to everything I've been reading. Would be most grateful to someone who might shed light on this. We live in Mexico full time so I'm not terribly worried about a neighborhood that's not real chic and fancy. Would just love to be able to walk to some restaurants, shops, etc. and not always be in a taxi or private car. A recommendation of a great guest house would also be welcome. Thank you so much in advance. Ann

Melville is OK, although there have been some recent reports about the area having "gone down" of late.

Two other areas you may want to consider are Parkhurst / Parktown North, and Greenside .. also trendy vibey areas with restaurants within walking distance of the many B & B's.

There is also Rosebank, very similar, but more "upmarket".

Rosebank has the "advantage" (or not) of having some shopping malls, in addition.

Thanks so much. Any recommendations for a B&B or guest house in Parkhurst or Greenside?

For future families following this link the Windmill does not accept children under 12. Seems they are fine everywhere else.

Melville is fine for families w kids. There is even a restaurant that is designed w kids in mind - on wkends it is filled w kids. I'm living in Melville right now.

I would choose Parkhurst over Rosebank unless you love shopping malls.
