One night in Jo'berg

Hi Everyone,

Would appreciate your thoughts.

We arrive at 0700 and will be driving to Kruger the next day.

Where do you suggest we stay? Near the airport? Or somewhere with easy access to the major motorway to KNP?

We want to visit the Apartheid Museum. Should we hire our car when we first arrive and drive to the museum OR taxi to museum and collect hire car the next day.

Thanks in advance.

The airport area does have "easy access to the major motorway to KNP". I certainly wouldn't second the recommendation above of a place in Midrand - quite a long way from the airport AND the Apartheid Museum. In fact the airport area may be a good idea - several hotels and guesthouses in the area - although I'm not sure of the best easy to get to the Apartheid Museum from there.

I suggest that you have a look at the Boksburg suburb. This is on the way to the KNP. Also 10 minutes from the airport. I suggest that you take a taxi for the Apartheid museum depends on what they are charging you.

The other option is to do the self drive. Start the day after the peak hour and also back before the traffic starts again in the afternoon. There is a nice restaurant at the Apartheid museum for a light meal. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays.

All the best

The Johannesburg Ho Ho bus does not go anywhere near the airport, so, one would still need to drive, or take a taxi to get to the Ho Ho bus.

Ho Ho bus safe Parking at Park Gautrain Station, or Gold Reef City /Apartheid Museum.

In which case, I would suggest, just drive, or take a taxi direct to the Apartheid museum.

It opens from 09:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, and you'd need 2 to 3 hours there.

( one can spend much more time there, if desired).

From the airport to the Apartheid Museum, I would take the R24 West towards Johannesburg, for about 9Km, at which point, it merges with the N12.

Keep in the left hand lane.

2Km further on, bear left, onto the N3 South.

Another 5Km, keep left, and onto the M2 West

Stay on the M2 West until you can exit left, onto the M1 South (DeVilliers Graaf) Motorway, about 9 Km.

Follow the M1 South till you see Xavier Street exit. About 5km.

Take Xavier Street, turn right over the freeway.

Follow this road for about 600 metres, and turn right into Northern Parkway (M34).

1 Km further on, turn left into Gold Reef road (opposite the Gold Reef City Casino Entrance)

The entrance to Gold Reef city will be in front of you.

Through the entrance, the Apartheid museum is on the left. Free parking.

Total distance, about 34 KM, freeway almost all the way. Travel time 30 minutes, traffic permitting.

There are a number hotels right at, and close to, the airport, to suit different budgets, and they are all very convenient to the motorway.

Soul Fusion Guest house, as recommended above, is 39Km from the airport, to the north, and 34 Km from the Apartheid Museum.

Your choice as to whether you want to pay the extra day's rental, or use a taxi.

Also your choice as to where you would prefer to stay.

Enjoy your visit.
