Tax refunds OR Tambo Airport

Does anyone know the opening times of the VAT tax refund office at Johannesburg OR Tambo airport. I have an 8.30 am departure and would like to reclaim some VAT. I have checked the website but can't find opening times. Many thanks.

AFAIK, the office should be open.

Remember to show the goods, and accompanying tax invoices at the tax inspection desk, before you check in.

The documents will be stamped.

You then show the stamped docs at the tax office ( which is after passport control), in order to claim your refund

If you have an early international departure then the office of the VAT should be open at about 6am already. Make sure that all your documentation(receipts, passport & flight details) is in order and make sure that you pack all the goods that you bought on the top of your bag, because they sometimes ask to see the goods that you have purchased.

The refund of vat at the airports can be a bit of a mission. Obviously as stated you must show the goods with the vat receiept and if the receipt etc is in order the the next step is to fillin forms for the issue of a pre loaded visa card with your rebate loaded onto it, there is a charge for the card [£5 uk] and as to be expected the exchange rate of the rand rebate into your own currency is poor you cannot have the rebate in rands for your next trip, then have your index finger fingerprinted and you leave the desk thinking was it worth it

It can be a mission, but the VAT is only 14%, so if you have only a few goods with accumulated VAT of only a few Rand (at the currency exchange) it is hardly worth it. Rather donate it to our "Third World" country.
