The Cradle of Humankind is not "a museum",

It covers an area of about 4700 hectares.

Within this area are several attractions, including an early gold mine, nature reserves, caves, two museums (Sterkfontein, and Maropeng), which are about 11Km apart, and there are numerous excavation sites, most not open to the public.

The only excavation open to the Public is the one at Sterkfontein, and then one cannot actually enter the excavation, but merely view it through a chain link fence!

You will not pass "The Cradle" on the way to Johannesburg from Graskop.

From Graskop to Sterkfontein, you will, in fact need to drive BEYOND Johannesburg, because Graskop is East of Johannesburg, and The "Cradle" is to the West.

The drive from Graskop to Sterkfontein will take up to 7 hours, or more, not counting rest and refuelling stops..

Remember, these facilities (Sterkfontein, Maropeng, etc); all close at 17h00, so in order to arrive at a reasonable time, say 15h00, you would need to leave Graskop before 06h00.

In fact 05h00 would be better, and hopefully you encounter no delays en route.

Leaving the area about 17h00, you would have to "backtrack" for about 1 hour, back to Johannesburg from the "cradle area".

Depending on the time of year, you will get to Johannesburg just before sunset, or after dark (winter).

Personally, I would not try it, as it would be VERY tiring.

Too late to edit.

If you leave the "Cradle" around 17h00, you will "backtrack" for about 1 hour, back to Johannesburg.

This will get you into Johannesburg either just before sunset, or after sunset, depending on the time of year.

Are you still spending time in Johannesburg? In which case, perhaps the Origins Centre would be an acceptable substitute? Accessible via the HOHO bus among other means.
