CPT or JNB? 4yo and 8yo children, 4 nights 2 days

Dear all,

Please help us plan our visit to South Africa.

We are arriving to JNB FEB04 at 7:05pm coming from Mauritius (need to clear immigration and customs). We are departing from JNB towards Argentina on FEB07 at 10:25AM. So, we have 4 nights but only two days (5, 6) in either JNB or, if far better, CPT.

We are a family of four with two children, 8 years old and almost 4 years old.

Do we stay in JNB or go to CPT? What do you recommend us to do in either city in two days? We would really like to do a safari.

Thanks!

What a shame you haven't got longer. As it is with only 2 days to play with, to spend more time flying (especially with young children ) would bite into what precious little you have spare.Perhaps consider an overnight visit to a game reserve close to Joburg to at least give you a taste of the safari experience. As your plane leaves mid AM on the 7th you will have to allow for international check in which means the night before you would need to be back in Joburg ( unless you want to drive back at some ungodly early morning hour )

Pilanesberg National Park which is about 3 hours from Joburg has a variety of accommodation and is SA 4th largest and lesser known Madikwe the 5th largest about 4 hours or so away. I have not been to either, but am sure other posters can go into more detail re the qualities of the afore mentioned places.

Another place to consider about 2 hours out of Joburg and in which I have stayed quite recently is Itaga Game Lodge, within Mabalingwe Nature Reserve ( see my review). Check out the posts of all these in TA to get a better idea of their attributes re flora and fauna. One thing worth a mention is that Mabalingwe offers kids activities such a horse riding, lion feeding, putt putt etc. so that might tip the balance in its favour. Hope this helps .

Thanks for your kind reply. We finally decided to extend our stay. We'll have the first and last night in Joburg near the airport and then 3 nights at Morukuru Family at Madikwe malaria free reserve. We will drive a 4x2 SUV to the lodge.

Do you recommend any hotel for 2 adults and 2 kids near the airport?

Thanks

Not many of the airport hotels have family rooms.

The one which does that we always use is the Peermont Metcourt Suites (not to be confused with The Peermont Metcourt) at Emperors Palace. It's an easy 5minute drive from the airport or there's a complimentary bus which runs every 20 mins. Family rooms have a king size bed plus two singles. Breakfast is included in the room rate for adults and was charged at R65 per child when we visited in August, and offers a good choice with eggs cooked to order.

There are plenty of restaurants available for evening meals in the Emperors Complex which are child friendly - we ate at Ocean Basket and Col'Cacchio on the 2 nights either side of our safari.

Hello, look at the Airport Grand Hotel, 2 children per room are accommodated free of charge bed only basis, and the rate is really reasonable, close to the airport, and shuttle as well.
