Day Trip Must-Visits?

Dear Folks

Will reach JHB airport around 3pm (on two days, with flight next noon) thus hoping you can recommend some must-visits and must-eat places so we can maximize our time instead of just in airport

1) how long and roughly how much USD does it take to reach city centre from airport pls?

2) should we expect shopping?

3) must-see attractions?

4) relaxing dinner places?

5) anything interesting in the airport?

Thanks in advance :)

Do you arrive at Johannesburg off an international, or a domestic flight, and when you leave, is it a domestic or international flight, because this will seriously affect the time you will have available.

In the order asked:

1 Airport to Sandton by road, about 40 minutes, the same to down town Johannesburg.

By Gautrain, its about 15 minutes to Sandton, add about 8 minutes for downtown Johannesburg, but you must change at Sandton.

The cost will be about ZAR135.00 pp from the airport to down town Johannesburg.

Road transfer will cost more.

Note the Gautrain runs only between 05:30 and 20:30

2 Not sure what you mean by "expect shopping", but we do have world class shopping malls.

3 Soweto, Apartheid Museum, Constitutional Hill, Lilliesleaf farm, to name a few.

Depending on timing, you may not be able to visit any of these.

4 Plenty of good restaurants, in many of Johannesburg suburbs.

What type of cuisine do you prefer?

Thanks Gavin for your fast advice :)

1) To reply you, arriving will be from HDS Domestic while departing will be International. Pls advise the time difference yeah

2) 3 of us so perhaps more worthwhile to share a airport transfer vehicle?

3) Given just 1 night, should we just stay in the Airport Inn B&B and leave luggage there?

4) Which is the biggest and best mall you would recommend pls?

5) Cuisine wise we are open, perhaps you can recommend any specialties or famous ones?

Yes given that we only have a few hours downtown (say between 430 - 930pm) before heading back to airport hotel, thinking just soak in the culture, enjoy nice meal and have a stroll around

My recommendations are:

- take the train, much better than sitting in traffic in a vehicle

- stay in Sandton or Rosebank , that way you can go out and experience the city rather than being stuck near the airport! the area around the airport is boring and the train only runs to 830

- Sandton city is probably the best shopping mall for variety! Rosebank is a bit more quirky and also easily accessible on the train

- check out eatout.co.za for restaurants
