Solo travelling from Johanneburg to Cape Town by coach

I will arrive in Johannesburg on Sept 21, and stay 3 nights in the city for some city-day-tours . I plan to trip by coach from Johannesburg to Cape Town, stay in cape town 4 nights and then will fly back to Johannesburg. The reason for taking a long trip by bus ( about 20 hours) is that I want to see the vast land and cities/towns from the bus windows along the way

I would like to know:1) If it is a good idea and safe for a solo senior to take the trip by bus , 2) if the bus station (Park City Transit Center) is safe, and 3) the difference between the seat of business class and luxury class on the bus ? Thanks you in advance.

Hi Qi Z

Where in Johannesburg will you be staying? I would suggest Sandton or Rosebank.... In response to your questions 1) Yes you should be fine travelling by bus. 2) The bus station is fairly safe, (how will you be getting to the station)?

Hi, Faseeha C, Thanks for your quick help. I have only booked the flight ticket and got the visitor visa from The South Africa Consulate in Toronto. I am a senior (68 years) and will go alone. My English langue is not good, especially my listening. Therefore I have to make a detailed itinerary. I intend to stay at a hostel Bobs Bunk House (40 St Anne Road,Huelyvale Edenvale). How do you think of this hostel? It is said to be one of the best hostels in the city. I need to be picked up at the airport and sent to the bus station and I need to an arrangement for my visit in the city (day tours). Thanks again!

Hi - I am a senior as well and have travelled to Cape Town several times. Rather than the bus, I would look into the Premier train. I took the train from JoBurg to Cape Town once and then twice the trip from Cape Town to JoBurg. The only glitch you may run into is that it doesn't go both directions every day, so check the schedule. It takes about 24 hours, you have a lovely sleeping compartment, meals are included in dining car, including high tea. Service is impeccable. Their web site is www.spoornet co.za. And you want the Premier Classe train. Either your hotel in JoBurg with get you to the train station or a taxi. The Premier train has it's own passenger lounge and you can get your drive to escort you there once in the train station. The station in Cape Town is in the center of town so easy to get a taxi to where you want to go. In Cape Town I stay at the Tudor Hotel in the center of town - very reasonable and clean.

Hi Qi Z

Edenvale is a half an hour drive from the main Johannesburg attractions, I would advise staying closer to the city in the areas mentioned if you're able to budget for it. There's alot of B&B's and guesthouses in these areas. You are able to take a meter taxi directly from the airport to the hotel or pre-arrange tranfers with a shuttle company. I agree with the previous comment, the train would be a better option, perhaps consider the blue train? 3 days should be sufficient to cover alot of the attractions in Johanneburg, maybe get in a bit of shopping too...

Hi Zlindar and Faseeha,

Thanks for your comments. I will check and consider the train. I do not like to take flights for local trip as I can see nothing in the air. As a senior and solo traveler and poor communication with English language, I will not go out alone even the day time.I Johannesburg, I would like to visit Soweto, lion park, constitution hill, downtown (top of Africa). For all these, i will take day-tours operated by tourism company. As to Pretoria or Sun city, could you please advise which is more worthful to go ?

I agree with the other posters, rather take the train, either the premier classe or the shosholoza meyl Tourist class, be sure to secure your booking before hand.

Then Edenvale is not generally an area tourists stay in, rather look at the Rosebank, Sandton area where you are close to the Gautrain which makes travelling around a bit easier. The gautrain is perfectly safe to use on your own and it can also be used to get to and from the airport. Then on the day trips if you are going on safari then rather go to pretoria otherwise take a Daytrip to Pilanesberg not Sun City.

Hello..

I am flying into J'burg and plan on taking the Gautrain to stay overnight for one night before taking the train to Cape Town. Would you suggest that I stay downtown near the Park station to be close toe the long distance train or at Sandton or some other location?

Hi Chowsea

I personally advise against staying in downtown Johannesburg, Sandton is a good area to stay... Just ensure you leave early to catch the train as there's always traffic getting into JHB in the morning
