The Gautrain high speed transit system now goes all the way from inside OR Tambo airport to Pretoria in about one third of the time compared to any road transfer.

http://www.gautrain.co.za/

However, at the moment the last train leaves ORT at 20:30. So if your flight arrives after 19:30, by the time you get through immigration, customs and baggage collection you might be too late. In which case you will need to book a transfer road shuttle.

There are a lot of ATMs in the airport. In International arrivals, one opposite the exit from customs and the rest just up the escalator on the shopping level. ATMs are always the best value to change money. Just use your bank debit card (Visa, Mastercard or Maestro) as you would at home.

Depending on where you want to go in Pretoria, a good idea might be to take the Gautrain to the Hatfield station in Pretoria, rather than going to the Pretoria station proper.

The only other practical way to get to Pretoria from OR Tambo airport is to take a taxi/shuttle or to hire a car. Just be aware that what is normally called a "taxi" in South Africa is a "minibus taxi", which is a working class commuter transport vehicle, not a metered taxi. There are metered taxis at the airports in South Africa, but they are very rare in other areas.

Depending on how you are charged for drawing money from an ATM (fixed fee per withdrawal or % of withdrawn amount), you don't have to withdraw a massive amount of money from the ATM at the airport. There are ATMs all over South Africa, so you can always get more cash if you need it.

At most shops you won't need cash, as they will have card facilities where you can use credit or debit cards.

Tips for using ATMs - preferably use ATMs specifically branded by a bank, like ABSA, Nedbank, FNB or Standard Bank, not the "independent" ATMs, that may give you grief. Also don't accept "help" from strangers at ATMs, as they'll most likely be conmen trying to get your cash or your card and PIN. I hasten to add that this has never happened to me or to anyone I know, but I suppose such people know to not try to con locals.

Gautrain, direct from airport, as mentioned in No 1 and No 3 above.

About ZAR135.00, according to the Gautrain website.

We are thinking of travelling to Pretoria for the 1st 2 nights of our holiday, arriving in OR Tambo about 9am.

What is it like to take luggage on the train - we would have at least 2 large suitcases as well as hand luggage.

It looks like we have to change train to get into central Pretoria - is this right? Again,is it easy enough to do with lots of luggage?

And is there a "rush hour" we should try to avoid?

Thank you!

Yes you do have to change trains to get from the airport to Pretoria. The first train is fine as far as space for luggage is concerned; the second, Pretoria-bound one is a commuter service and according to a couple of posts on the Johannesburg forum last week, it can get problematic. You would be doing the trip mid-morning, outside of peak commuting times though. Personally I've only used the Pretoria line once during the day and the train was fairly full. Just to give you an idea, there was a young couple with a baby and I must say the stroller did get in people's way.
