Another option for quieter beaches is down the south coast. There is plenty of accommodation right on the beach. Try the following website. This is the site that most locals use.

There is no real snorkelling in Kwazulu apart from Kosi Bay so your options then are Thonga or Rocktail or self catering or B&B in St Lucia and then travelling to snorkelling in Kosi or Cape Vidal. Game parks in the area can arrange visits to the beach if you wish to fit game viewing in as well . e.g. Bayete Zulu does day trips to Cape Vidal.

Otherwise for just pure chilling on a quiet beach look at Days at Sea, to be close to restaurants etc then Umdloti, Ballito or Umhlanga are your best bet.

The South Coast has to be one of our ultimate beach destinations, with 4 blue flag beaches and another 4 in the pilot status. You can choose from a seculded rocky cove to a 2km long stretch of sandy beach.

As 'Proudly' mentions the KZN coast is not the best for snorkelling, but on a calm day you might be able to try your luck at Trafalgar which is a Marine Reserve, and the warm Indian ocean which is still great for a swim in the sea.

To be near the shops and restaurants then look around Shelly Beach, St Michaels area and a good local website for Quality self catering and B&B accommodation is www.bandbnetwork.co.za
