Travelling to KwaZulu-Natal while pregnant??

Hi,

My wive and I are planning a 3 week trip to South Africa in September. Our idea was to spent an important part of our time at Hluhluwe Umfolozi and iSimangaliso wetland park (st Lucia).

If everything goes well my wife is 16 weeks pregnant at the start of our trip. Here (malaria.org.za/Malaria_Risk/…risk_maps.htm) I can see that the mentioned areas are in a low risk malaria area.

Is it (ir)responsible to visit this area in September while being pregnant?

It is very low risk and people live in these communities and yes, they have babies too, however if you don't want to take the risk then perhaps you should look at another reserve such as Nambiti, which has various lodges, we stayed at Esiweni Lodge (this is a big 5 malaria free reserve) in the midlands area. But September is a very low risk time of year as there are not many mozzies around, we were at Phinda in the same area two years back, in September and never found one mozzie. So it is a personal decision, personally I think you will be fine. www.kimssouthafrica.blogspot.com

Have you thought of seeking (knowledgeable) medical advice?

How important is that aspect of the trip to you compared to your wife's health?

What level of risk are you both prepared to accept?

Difficult for total strangers to give advice, without knowing the answers to those questions.

thanks you for your quick replies. We very much appreciate the local experience and knowledge!

I didn't knew people were getting babies there too ;) and we will certainly look into your suggestion about Nambiti.

Yes, we have thought (and did) of seeking medical advice. The difficulty is that the travel clinics in the Netherlands do not have sufficient local knowledge especially when risk changes with season. Example, for Kenya we were advised (and took) yellow fever jabs while once there there hasn't been a single case for more than 10 years.

We have tried to contact the South African travel clinic but until now no response.

It is obvious that the health of my wife is of the utmost importance. It is all about risk. No risk does not exist, maybe (but I do not know!!) the chance of a car accident is far higher than the chance of getting malaria in this region during this time of the year.

And this is what we received from the Travel Clinic in South Africa.

"

The areas you will visit fall into the low risk area, but being pregnant puts your wife in higher risk category, and she will need extra protection. She also has to see her obstetrician to see that both herself and the baby are healthy in order to take such a trip and together with a travel specialist determine whether prophylaxis is suitable to her and the pregnancy.

You need to take out travel insurance that will specifically cover a pregnancy and possible complications.

"

Altogether we decided to skip this aspect of our trip and save it for hopefully another time.

Thanks again for your contributions!
