Please recommend a holiday spot for beach and walks

Hello!

We are young parents with a 6-month daughter, travelling to the East Coast, for two weeks in early May. We’ll be flying to Durban. It’s our first time to S. Africa although we are currently based in Gabon

First of all, we cannot decide between N and S coast. Perhaps it’s worth splitting it 50/50? What’s more important we’re looking for a spot with an easy access to a swimming-allowed, sandy beach AND a green (forest, park, seaside dunes) area for long walks with a stroller – this is quite important!

We’ll be renting a car for shopping and one-day excursions (waterfalls, gorges) into the country so it would be good for the place to be well located in this respect. I don’t know if any game reserves are feasible with a toddler…

In terms of accommodation we’re looking at a charming approx. 4 (5)-star standard: guesthouse, lodge or similar.

We would be grateful if you could think of a town or even a particular lodging that would meet our expectations. We can’t wait to visit this beautiful place!

Many thanks!

Hello,

This is neither a lodge, nor 4 star.

It is a hotel, three stars, but I can highly recommend it.

They have won a number of awards.

Pumula Beach Hotel on the South Coast.

I doubt if you'll find anything like this on the North coast, as that area has become very commercialised, and you'd have to go far north to find something like this.

100 Km from central Durban.

138 Km from King Shaka International Airport

Easy drive on the freeway.

I believe it will be ideal for your needs, as you describe them.

There is natural bush/forest, a beautiful Blue Flag status beach.

Children are welcome, there are nearby nature reserves.

Situated on the South Coast at UMZUMBE.

Have a look, at least at their web site, and while you are on the website, please read the comments. Especially the comment by Terri Frederic

Enjoy your visit to my beautiful country.

regards,

Gavin

PS I have no association with the hotel.

Just that I have been there, and I think it is great

Gavin,

Thanks a lot for your reply and recommendation. I actually did see the Pumula hotel's website a few days ago and loved the location.

The place however gives an impression of being a little bit too family-oriented, our baby will obviously not be able to take advantage of their kids activities and I fear that we, as a couple could be overwhelmed by the families with elder children. Hopefuly the place is much quieter in may?... We will keep it on our list, thanks again!

Hi,

I think you will find that that the place will be fairly quiet, because in May, the Easter Holidays will be over, and the Winter holidays will not yet have begun, and the weather should still be very pleasant.

Enjoy, whatever you decide.

I suggest the North Coast, Umhlanga is just a few kms north from Durban, have a look at the Oyster Box Hotel, it is 5 star, and the area has a beautiful promenade for walks along the beach and right at the end, it has a lovely forest walk as well.

Hello and I would drive north to St Lucia. Its about a 2 1/2 hour drive from the airport. Here you will find a bit of everything and May is a lovely time to be up there. There are very places in KZN that are directly on the beach. There is a board-walk leading to the huge beaches here. Cape Vidal is only a short drive away. Then there are estuary tours where you can hippos & crocodiles. There is a crocodile centre to. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game reserve is also only a short drive away. If you were to go South coast take a look at Margate. I found the south coast a bit commercial but you are close to Oribi Gorge. Take a look at my site for ideas. I have spent a lot of time in KZN.

Thank you for all the suggestions. We are leaning towards spending 4-5 days in Umhlanga and then going for 10 days to the Southbroom area. St. Lucia looks fantastic but I think we prefer to leave it for the next year, once the baby has grown up and we can make the most of those wildlife reserves. Mark, your site is an excellent resource though I must say that the wealth of accommodation options in that area makes it quite a clhallenge to sort through! We'll let you know about our choice. Please let us know if anybody has any tips and ideas for first time visitors.

Thanks and regards,

Alex

Hi and thank you, we tried to keep it simple and only offer places to stay in KZN. There are though just over 1000 places listed in the province! I have not stayed in Southbroom but I have friends who stay every year in Port Edward. They have a new baby plus two young girls and love the south coast. If you enter Southbroom into the accommodation section you will get all the options and can break them down into self catering, hotels, etc. Please let me know if you book through there and where you choose.

Ballito is also a lovely alternative. You can go for lovely walks, safe beaches for swimming and you can reach shops and restaurants within walking distance.

We enjoyed staying in this boutique hotel which is within walking distance of the beach: http://www.coco-de-mer.co.za/

I love the Southbroom area, especially Port Edward. I am biased though as I have been visiting the area almost yearly since I was a very young child and have since taken my 4 children there from when they were babies (my eldest is now 17). It has hardly changed at all! IMO the South Coast has the most beautiful, unspoilt beaches. :)

There is a lovely walk along the dunes from Ramsgate to Southbroom and then on to Trafalgar, it is a well worn path but there are a few bits that go onto the beach sand and over the rocks so I'm not sure if you be able to do it all with a stroller. Southbroom has a beautiful golf course on the sea and there are quiet roads through the fairways that you could walk.
