driving cape town to durban

How long does this drive take? Is it safe to do as an American couple during the world cup?or would it be better to fly?

and any suggestions on car rentals would be appreciated!

it is a safe trip to do as an American Couple, tourists do it all the time, however it is a long drive +- 18 hours. You could drive from Ct to Pe and catch a flight from there to Durban which is about an 1/12 flight or if you choose to fly then stay over somewhere. It is undoubtedly the best way to see Sa, but perhaps not in the time frame you have and the main reason you are coming which is the WC. www.kimssouthafrica.blogspot.com

Its safe enough, but as Kim pointed out, 18-20 hours of solid driving. There are 2 routes - the more scenic coastal route where you stay on the same N2 highway the whole time and Port Elizabeth is the half-way mark. Or the inland route where you drive to Bloemfontein and then Durban.

For a tourist with 4-5 days to kill I would recommend driving the N2 coastal route stopping along the way to see the garden route (which is what the stretch between Cape Town and PE is called). But that would involve sleeping in a different town each night (and booking all that accommodation). I would only recommend that if you really enjoy road trips and want to see the countryside. Otherwise flying will only take you a couple of hours!
