Durban to Port St Johns

I'm thinking of driving from Durban to Port St Johns.

Pls could I get advice on whether this is advisable?

And the state of the roads?

We did it with a young child and 76 year old granny. no problems, didn't feel nervous, etc. just found it a bit of a boring drive.

It is much quicker to fly to East Londen and hire a car from there, then drive to Port St. Johns. Beautiful small seaside town.

Haven't done this particular section in a while and there definitely could be potholes - but nothing you wont be able to handle. As for cows - the whole of the Transkei is rural and there are lots of farm animals that are not kept fenced in - so this is always something to be aware of when traveling this section,

There are sections of 'bad' road. If you travel via Port Edward and Bizana then the road from the Wild Coast Casino to Bizana to where it meets up with the R61 has some potholes so try not to drive after dark (you want to avoid this in the Transkei anyway because of cattle and cars with no lights).

If you go inland at Port Shepstone then to Harding and Kokstad, the road between Port Shepstone and Kokstad is a bit dodgy but just be alert.

Do not exceed the speed limits - the cops are like fleas around there.

Going through Bizana, Flagstaff and Lusikisiki is interesting...

Personally I think Port St Johns proper is a dump but if you are there then make a point of driving up to the airfield - the views from up there are spectacular!

The roads on the N2 from Durban to Kokstad to Mtatha are fine, no problems there. I don't know about from Mtatha to Port St Johns but I am sure the roads will be ok as many South Africans travel this route. There is livestock on the roads but usually you will see them on the sides of the road in time to anticipate a crossing over. Stick to the speed limit and you will be fine.
