Durban night driving and road condition up to Kruger

Hello, all.

We will be flying from Port Elizabeth to Durban and we are trying to decide between 2 flights. One would get us into Durban at 5pm and the other at 9pm. We are leaning toward the later flight as that would give us a more leisurely trip along the Garden Route before catching our flight. Our main concern is how safe the route is between King Shaka Airport and The Benjamin Hotel on Florida Road late at night. Of course, we will exercise as much caution as possible but I would just like the locals to chime in if we will be passing through a "red" zone and would be better off taking the earlier flight even if it means being more rushed.

Secondly, we have 2.5 days to drive from Durban up to Gomo Gomo Lodge, which is not far from Hoedspruit. We would like to stop at Kamberg to hike to the Game Shelter Pass with an overnight at Dundee and then another overnight further north, probably at Nelspruit. (We'd be open to any suggestions for a better overnight option in that area!) I've been mapping things out on Google maps but it doesn't really help me understand what the road conditions are like in that region. So any feedback on the driving conditions in that area would be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

Good afternoon

Provided you take the normal precautions you would when visiting any city you will be safe driving from the airport to your hotel.

The rock art at Game Pass Shelter is phenomenal! At Kamberg, there is a Rock Art interpretation centre where you will be shown a DVD on the history of the San people. You will then be escorted by a Rock Art Custodian to the shelter. The return trip (there is a fairly steep climb at the end) takes approximately 3 hours. The trips depart at 08.30, 10.30 and 12.30.

The drive time from Durban is roughly 2.5hrs - with the last 20kms being on a dirt road (it is suitable for a sedan). There is self catering accommodation available at Kamberg - contact www.kznwildlife.com

The best route from Kamberg to Hoedspruit is via Newcastle, Lydenburg. I would suggest that you overnight at Dullstroom - a very interesting little town.

I hope this helps

A nice stopover on your way to Hoedspruit is Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge between Carolina and Badplaas. This is about a 5 hour drive from Dundee.

At Dawsons you can also enjoy lovely hikes and they have wild antelope roaming around. Lovely scenery, large suites, good food.

The roads to Hoedspruit are in a very good condition. They were all redone for the World Cup. Although the N1 is a "highway" it only has two lanes at most sections. Plan a bit of extra time on this section.

Dear Ann V.,

Thank you for your detailed reply.

We will take all the normal precautions and the route from the airport to hotel seems straightforward enough. I suppose I'm just worried about getting lost and suddenly landing in a really bad area and it's hard to tell from the maps if any such "must avoid" neighborhoods are along the route.

I am very excited about seeing the rock art at Kamberg. It's good to know that the last 20kms are dirt roads...at least we'll be prepared.

Do you have any thoughts on Dundee? We would like to do an overnight there since it seems like a reasonable drive from Kamberg as we head northward and we wanted to go visit the Talana Museum and some of the battlefields, if time permits.

Thanks again!

It doesnt make any difference of what time you arrive in Durban ,it is very safe to drive to Benjamini hotel on florida road, get into the M4 south ,as soon you pass the Mosses Mabhida Stadium on your right, the first robort turn right .

On the fourth robort turn right on Florida and look for your hotel....very good choice.

Fom Durban to Kamberg is +- 3 hours drive.

The presentation of the video 20 minutes and the walk to the caves is 1 hour and 30 minutes up ,1 hour back.

Mooi River, Ladysmith ,Dundee is +- 2hours ,try to do all these during the day light,by 17:30 it starts to get dark.

The road is on a good condition but from the N11 to Dundee the R68 has lot of construction going on.

I suggest from Dundee to Kruger National Park you take R33 -R34 - R69 -R66 through Swaziland and spend the night at Hlane Royal National Park or Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary . www.biggameparks.org

Dear first zulu safarisz,

Thank you for all this information and for reassurance about driving to our hotel in Durban later in the evening.

We had considered driving through Swaziland but were concerned that there may be complications with the car rental companies for taking the car into another country. We have yet to verify that issue.

We are greatly looking forward to the trip!
