10 day trip - can I do it all?

I have 10 days in May during which I'd like to see : Cape Town, Johannesburg, Kruger and Victoria Falls. Is it possible to see these places in 10 days?

I also may be traveling solo, so as a 30 year old female, do you have any suggestions for tour guides that might offer tours that encompass all these places?

Hi there,

Wow, well, you definitely have gutso! :-)

But, in my honest opinion, you would spend 85% of your time travelling instead of enjoying the sights South Africa has to offer.

In 10 days, if I were you, I would do the following:

Day 1: Fly into Cape Town

Day 2: Cape Town

Day 3: Cape Town

Day 4: Fly Cape Town - Kruger

Day 5: Kruger

Day 6: Kruger

Day 7: Fly out of Kruger - Johannesburg

Day 8: Johannesburg & surrounds (SOWETO etc)

Day 9: Johannesburg & surrounds

Day 10: Fly home.

I really think that adding in Vic Falls would be quite stressful - But of course, the choice is always yours in the end :-)

All the best,

I think that you are trying to do too much. Jacqui has come up with a great itinerary. I agree that to add Vic Falls you will have to leave out something. If it is a must do, then I suggest you leave out JHB and head to the falls.

My suggestion, fly to Cape Town, spend 3 nights, next day fly to Kruger. Stay 2 nights, 1 night in Joburg, then fly to Victoria Falls for 2 nights, can be done..

I will also chime in with the suggestion of leaving Victoria Falls and J'burg for another trip. This is a special place in the world and it would be such a shame to spend so much of in in airports, sitting in immigration queues, transporting to/from and checking in/out of hotels.

Also, considering that these four locations are all quite widely spread apart, you would need to plan on spending between 1/2-3/4 a day for each move. That is simply too much when you only have 10 days in Southern Africa.

What I would suggest is to simply visit two destinations, Cape Town and Kruger National Park (KNP). I would spend 5-6 nights in Cape Town and 4 nights in Kruger National Park. If you want a spare day in J'burg that could fall into play, assuming you are flying in/out of South Africa, via O Tambo Airport. If not, I'd save J'burg and Vic Falls for another trip.

Alternatively, do what you can to make this a three week trip, 17-21 days, so that you could more conveniently fit J'burg and Vic Falls into the equation.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do. You'll love Southern Africa. Its great.

South Africa is such a wonderful destination I think you will regret not taking more time and planning a return trip. Cape town and surrounds are simply glorious and deserve a good few days. You have the winelands, East Coast, West Coast, Cape Town itself. Kruger - to me - is one of the most magical places on earth, and I always feel like I'm on a different planet there, so I would take at least 3 nights there. Keep in mind that we have discovered that when you spend a day getting there, you can't really do much that day, and it's your first night, so two full days minimum will be three nights. 3 full days CT, 3 full days Kruger, + your 2 'arrival nights' - 8 nights. You could, as has been suggested, fit in Joburg/Soweto if flying out of OR Tambo. Leave Vic Falls for another trip. You wont be sorry. Enjoy and welcome to our lovely country!

You could always leave Kruger out - there are fantastic game reserves in Zimbabwe close to Vic Falls so you could kill two bird with one stone, as they say! I would also leave out JHB.

I agree with the other replays. I have just organised a similar tour and realistically you would need 14 to 21 days to do what you are proposing and really appreciate it. I agree that Jo'burg is not worth the bother unless you really want to. I would suggest a 2 centre holiday at most. Maybe Cape Town and Durban? You could start In Capetown and do some of the garden route hen fly to Durban and visit the Drakensburgs, the battlefields and end up with a short safari.

My plans include Capetown then Knysna which is a days drive, then to George for a flight to Durban and on to the Drakensburg mountains again a days travel. I suggest a stop over for a day or two at cathedral peak hotel as it is good for both the mountains and the battlefields. Then you could drive up to a game reserve a few hours away called Thanda. It is very nice and not too expensive. Stay here for 3-4 days and drive back to Durban for your flight home. If you use SAA you can get all of your flights for a sensible price, my guess would about £700.

Whatever you decide to do, have a great time.

Regards,

Neil.

We are going in June and originally planned 10 days . We are changing for a 2 week trip just to be able to take advantage of the place and not half kill ourselves in the process. We figure we are going so far away at such expense that we should make the most of it. Pity we can't extend beyond 2 weeks. There is just this little obligation called work - lol!

Hello and may I ask, as you have asked this in the Durban section, are you staying in Durban? If so you might find you need not leave KwaZulu Natal.....of course that depends if you have specifi things you want to see?
