Where to stay?

Hi All,

Family of 4,(kids 16 and 14)flying in to Durban, one night accomdation needed before driving to Phinda(&Beyond) next morning.Umhlanga or Ballito.Either good accomdation with a decent restaurant on site or the location means we can walk to good restaurants. Also which car hire co would you use for a weeks hire?

Thank You

Hello, i recommend Umhlanga. Try Oyster Box Hotel, right on the beach front, excellent views and accommodation. There is also the Protea Hotel, but only sea views, not on the beach. There are numerous restaurants in that area to choose from and supermarkets to stock up on snacks and water. Also, up on the ridge, there is the large Gateway Shopping centre, and right opposite there are 2 hotels - Royal Palms and City Lodge (i have stayed there with guests many times and can recomend it). So then you just walk over the road into the center and within a few metres there are open air restaurants of all types. Very safe areas as well. The main car rental companies are Europcar, Budget, Avis, Tempest and then a smaller one - AvoRentals.

Depending on your kids, Gateway could be a good option as they could go to the cinema, bowling, try the wave rider. there is also a small theatre doing supper shows as well as the usual array of SA restaurants.

if you want a walk on the beach, etc head into Umhlanga as suggested.

Shakaland has basic accommodation in Zulu huts. It's an interesting place to learn about Zulu life, has a show with Zulu dancing and the food is ok too . It's a couple of hours out of the Durban .
