best time to visit kruger.

Hi fellow travellers. Has anyone been to Kruger nat. park in early october? Planning on staying at Crocodile bridge camp for three days & was wondering what the weathers like then? And what chance of seeing any of the "big 5" in this southern area of the park?

Or has anyone had a good stay at one of the other camps where the largest concentration of animals hang out? Thanks for any help

Regards.... lee in Australia.

We always go to Kruger in October. As it is towards the end of the dry season the vegetation is fairly low which helps in animal-spotting. Also, after a long dry spell their are fewer mosquitoes around. In October we usually find the temperature pleasnat, last October was about 25 deg C peaking one day at 40 deg C. There tends to be more animal movement if the temp is a bit cooler rather than the summer heat.

Haven't stayed at Crocodile Bridge so can't comment on the Camp or possible animal sightings. Lower Sabie is a very nice camp. We tend to like to go in Phabeni Gate drive along the Sabie River.Have a quick visit into Skukuza for toilets then drive around the loop of roads H1-2 and H4-1 Have seen a vast variety of animals/birds in this area. Tried Malelane Gate and Berg en Dal area with much less success. The one governing factor is of course the animals themselves. Some days you see everything you want next day much less. The Kruger Map does indicate that the Crocodile Bridge Camp area does support the Big 5 so I guess it is just about good luck and eyesight.

My cousin saw the Big 5 before breakfast in the southern part of the park.

Yes it is all a matter of luck as to what you see in the Park. September / October is a good time to visit the park. We stayed a a small camp called Biyamiti Very nice and peaceful.

I live in White River which is not far from Crocodile Bridge maybe 100km or so. If we can be of any help please just mail me.

Yes October is a good month, usually still bone dry but sometimes the rains start in late October already. Those waterholes that have water will be active every day, so you can park at a waterhole around mid-morning and just wait for the animals to arrive.

This year seems to be rather dry (so far) and therefore we expect this October to be very dry and dusty - the bush will not be lush and green. In fact there will be hardly any grass left in the Crocodile Bridge area. Often the transformation from October to November is dramatic - everything turns from brown and dusty to green and fresh, a few days after the first rains.

October can be rather hot already. Be prepared for day time temperatures over 30 degrees C.

Crocodile Bridge is a lovely little camp in a good game viewing area. Two things to keep in mind - the camp is right at the entrance and overlooks the Crocodile River (with farmland on the other side, not bush). The other thing is that there is no restaurant, only a small shop where you can get basic take-away meals.

Have fun!
