Airport and Seasons

Is there a season that is best to see wildlife in Kruger?

What airport would I fly into from NY to see Kruger?

Hi majik48, any time of the year is great for visiting Kruger. In general the dry season from May to September offers better game viewing because the bush is dry and more open, and the animals congregate at the waterholes. But other seasons also have advantages. November and December after the first rains is a favorite time for me, because the bush is beautiful and green, and there are plenty of young animals around. The birding is also prolific during the summer months. You may want to keep your other destinations in mind too. July and August is great for Kruger but not so great for Cape Town and the beach. So if you plan to combine destinations, look at a season that is good for all the destinations on your trip, like April or October perhaps.

To get to Kruger, you would fly in to Johannesburg from New York, and then take a connecting flight to Nelspruit (the closest town). Or you can travel there by road from Johannesburg, it takes about 5 hours. If you are staying at a private game lodge in the Timbavati or northern Sabi Sand game reserve, you would want to fly from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit rather than to Nelspruit.

Hope this helps and enjoy your trip!
