We are a family of six, consisting of 2 adults and children aged 16,14,8 and 6 we would like some advice on where to stay in africa that we can see some wildlife and possibly a african tribe / village. And anything else that we should include in a visit of 2 weeks! We like to cater for ourselves to try and keep the costs down.Thanks.

You need to do some research and narrow your choice down - there are 54 countries in Africa, although South Africa is probably the most popular with foreign visitors who want self-catering.

Research the national parks in SA, and also work out a budget for your trip and how you want to get about . http://www.sanparks.org/

Renting a car is economical, and all the major hire companies will have prices online.

Mpila Camp Mfolozi/Hluhluwe Game Reserve South Africa situated in Zululand, home of the Zulu tribes and on the Mozambique border the Tsonga people and their famous fish traps can be found. An exquisite area of estuaries filled with hippo and crocs and birdlife and pristine untouched beaches (world heritage site) and of course Kruger National Park is another option.

Your question is posted in the Kruger National Park forum, and this is without doubt South Africa's top safari destination, and one of Africa's most affordable large game reserves offering a fantastic safari experience. If you prefer to self-cater and drive yourself around to save on costs, Kruger is perfect for that. You don't even need a 4x4. If budget allows, you can combine some time in Kruger (self-drive) with a few nights at one of the private game lodges in greater Kruger (these are not self-catering but they allow off-road game drives, which is not allowed in Kruger). In the area around Kruger there is much to see and do which the kids (and adults) will enjoy. There is a Shangaan tribal village near Hazyview called Shangana, and a Swazi tribal village at the border of Swaziland called Matsamo. The Lowveld (subtropical area to the west of Kruger) has many accommodation options, activity options and lots of beautiful scenery. The Panorama Route is famous for its view points and waterfalls, and well worth a visit. If you have two weeks, you can even combine a bit of Mozambique, or travel through Swaziland down to northern Kwazulu-Natal province for some beach time, more game viewing, and a zulu tribal village.

Another popular option for people who have 2 weeks available, is to combine Kruger with Victoria Falls. They're a bit far apart but the flight from Joburg to Vic Falls is only 2 hours and the activity options here for the kids will appeal to all ages. So 10 days in and around Kruger followed by 3 or 4 days at Victoria Falls will be a winner.

Hope this helps! Browse these forums some more, there is a ton of useful information here in previous threads.
