Coach or Shuttle Service for Johannesburg to/from Skukuza

Coach or Shuttle Service for Johannesburg to/from Skukuza

Hi there-

Does anyone have some advice about companies that do road transport from Johannesburg to Skukuza and return? I am interested in visiting Skukuza but am reluctant to hire a car and do the 5-6 hour drive myself. I would rather go on escorted game drives rather than stick to the roads that cars are allowed on so having a car rental doesn't seem necessary. Looking to visit for 4 nights in the middle of February and will be traveling with a friend. Any help is much appreciated! Cheers.

have a look at www.safarisdirect.co.za

They do scheduled transfers from JHB to Hazyview and Kruger Gate and they will also be able to arrange the transfer further to Skukuza.

Just to mention that no-one inside KNP is allowed to go off road. The SANPARK verhicles AND outside operators will use the very same roads you would be allowed to drive with a hired car. There is no difference.

With a hired car you will safe lots of money as the cost for the transfer one way will pay you at least 2 days of a small hired car. You still can do guided tours from the camp but also can selfdrive and make us of the day rather than sitting in the camp between game drives.

Why Skukuza? There are much nicer camps around the area!

Otherwise take a bus to Nelspruit and then hire a car there which will make the drive only 30 mins or so

BTW the drive to Numbi Gate e.g is only 4,5 hours and from there the game viewing already starts. You could also go to Kruger Gate, that will take app, 5,5 hours with a short game viewing trip to Skukuza from there.

First, I'd give some thought to flying all the way through to Nelspruit (MQP), either on one ticket or by buying a RT ticket from JNB. That would save a fair amount of road time. A car or shuttle ride from MQP to KNP would be about 90 minutes. I'm not 100% sure whether your plans are to be at rest camps in the National Park (KNP) or in the adjoining privates reserves (though you mention Skukuza, which is in KNP). People often refer to them as if they are the same. As noted above, in KNP you must stay on roads. If you want to go off-road, in my mind a better way to see game up close, you need to go the private reserves. The private reserves will cost more, but, again in my mind, a better experience. Or you could do 2 nights in KNP then take a short drive into the private reserve (e.g., Sabi Sand). That way you get the best of both worlds: a chance to experience a great national park and the comfort and game viewing of the private reserve. Depends on your budget.

All - thanks so much for your valuable advice. I did not realize that all vehicles are restricted to the posted roads within the park. That makes a difference on deciding whether to rent a car. Good tip to book game drives in the nearby private game reserve.

Klaus - what other rest camps would you suggest? I think I have more options since I will be renting a car. I would be looking at doing this economically if my friend travels with me. If she opts out, I would be looking for both experiences - classic Kruger and luxury lodge, so any suggestions for that would be welcome as well.

I would suggest looking at Satara and Lower Sabie camps. Both in very good game viewing areas. Or you could spend a couple of nights at one of the Bushveld camps such as Talamati or Biyamiti. Have a good look at www.sanparks.org and you can see everything about each camp including accommodation photos, availability on your chosen dates, distances between camps and you can also book direct. Bear in mind that most people book up to 11 months in advance for the popular camps and accommodation types. So if you are going this February you would want to get your skates on!

I agree with tryhard re. Satara and lower Sabie, both very nice camps and easy to reach. I would split in 2 and 2 days. You could also look at Berg en dal.

Just note that the bushcamps dont have restaurants and are strictly selfcatering.

If you are flexible regarding the duration of your stay, think about adding 1 or 2 nights to explore the area around KNP, such as Blyde River Canyon.

I'm grateful to you both for the additional advice. It's fantastic that people like you are willing to share local information and can give those of us who have never been there a good frame of reference to make travel decisions. I feel that I am well prepared to go forth and book! :-) Thanks again!

Hi there.

We did a trip last March that combined stays in both Kruger Park bungalows and Sabi Sand lodges and will doing same again this year. Agree completely with Steve above, this is the ultimate way and you get 2 completely different experiences.

If you are interested in more detail check out our trip report that was done on our return, It is an honest and unbiased account of our trip which shows the comparisons between the main park and private concessions.

tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g293740-i9186-k…

Just to add we would only ever do it by car, the flexibilty is fantastic especially once you get in the park. Last time we stayed at Lower Sabie and Satara [2 of the most popular camps] and next time we are staying at four camps and then again back to Sabi Sand and Timbavati.

Enjoy your planning and don't hesitate to ask anything.

Did you feel safe driving in the area? I have got myself a bit worried about the risks (we are due to fly out to SA in July) I am more worried about the drive from J'Burg to Kruger than anything else. I guess because it will be our first drive and a long one.
