is kruger too busy?

We are flying into Jo'burg in July and plan to stay for 2-3 weeks. Kruger is an obvious place to visit but is it possible to get off the beaten track? we went to Masai Mara a couple of years ago and there were a lot of vehicles crowded round certain animals. Also, what is it like to self drive? We hired a 4WD and spent time in the Kalahari a few years ago and that was great. Or should we avoid Kruger completely?

Is Kruger too busy? - Absolutely not!

The park is bigger than the whole of Wales! There are 3,000km of roads and tracks that you can drive. Yes there are around an average of 5,000 visitors a day. But just think of the population of Cardigan spread across the whole of Wales North to South, and you will get an idea of how crowded Kruger is!

Yes, you will find the most popular regions such as round the big camps like Skukuza and Lower Sabie - and particularly the road between these two camps, can get busy, especially at holidays or weekends. But remember that SANParks limits day visiror numbers on weekends and holiday days so there are always places to get away from it all. Just you and the animals!

A few tips. The central and northern areas of the park are much quieter than the south.

Stay in the smaller bushcamps rather than the big camps. Jjust do the calculation. Some of the bushcamps have only 8 cottages (say 25 people). They are often 20km or so from the nearest bigger camp. So an area of 400 sqkm for 25 people - at least in the two hours after the camp gates open and two hours before they close. BTW the bushcamps have some of the best accommodation units in Kruger - spacious and comfortable. They just don't have the facilities of the big camps, restaurants, supermarkets, cinemas, petrol stations, banks or golf courses!

Try and structure your routes on the side gravel and sand roads rather than the main tarred routes. Get a detailed Map. Three quarters of Kruger's 3,000km of roads are untarred. We often drive for hours and see half a dozen other vehicles.

Better if you can go outside the South African School Holidays - better choice of accommodation and fewer people. You say July but, after the schools go back (this year on the 16th) will be quieter, if possible for you.

Self-Drive is the ONLY way to do Kruger - it is how virtually all South Africans do it - and, unlike Kenya, locals are 80 percent of the visitors. You don't need a 4x4 or any special vehicle. We fly up to Kruger nearly every year for a week or more. We always hire a Toyota Yaris or similar vehicle. We have done tens of thousands of kilometres in this type of vehicle in Kruger and always been able to get everywhere (except maybe in the middle of the wet season - July is absolutely dry!) and nearly always fill at least 20 pages of our A4 Kruger animal sightings book - and about the same of birds.

"Avoid Kruger Completely?" - Only if you want to miss one of the best, and THE best value, wildlife experiences in the world!

PS that's the town of Cardigan - not the county!

I second all of the above! We put off visiting Kruger for 10 years for the same concerns (too busy?), going instead to Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Those countries and their parks are magnificent but we are going back to Kruger again and again now. We love it - don't miss it!
