What to do After Kruger?

Hello,we are 3 adults traveling end of July & start of August. We land in Johannesburg and plan on driving to Kruger and spending 10 nights, which have already been booked in Kruger.

After that we have 10 nights to arrange - any ideas- suggested itineraries- before we fly back from Johannesburg. We are quite active and don't want to spend all our time driving.

I was looking at the East Cape, Drakensberg mountains but thought hiking might be a bit chilly in August.

Thanks for any input.

Fantastic to have 10 nights in Kruger, the longer you stay the more you will see.

As for the other 10 nights, there are plenty of options depending on what type of things you enjoy and would like to see and do. What are you interested in, for example shark diving, whale watching, scenery, wineries ?

The obvious choice is Cape Town and surrounding areas, were you intending to visit there ?

@Inyati. According to wunderground the winter is stable in the Drakensberg weather-wise. Little precipitation, sunny, warm days, freezing nights admittedly and a small chance of snow. The temperature range for the northern parts is -4 up to 27 celcius - sounds perfect for hiking.

At other times of years, aren't there a lot of storms and rain?

Hi Graham5000

Yes, summer has more rain but during winter there is often the problem with the clouds hanging low in the mornings as well as the low temperatures (it can get to -15°C) so that you can mostly hike during the middle of the day. On top of that, it gets dark sooner.

So I would say suitable for shorter walks yes, but not necessarily for longer hikes. But if these are well planned with the right equipment, then of course it is possible to hike in the Drankensberg during winter.

But the best time is March - mid June and September - November.

while in the area around KNP, a must see is the Blyde River Canyon.

I'd also suggest Blyde River Canyon area, can easily do a one day panorama route drive or spend 2-3 days in this area, exploring and looking at scenery. Here are a couple links that might be worth a read.

Also, love the Cape Town suggestion if you don't mind the transportation from Kruger to CPT. Might be a bit inconvenient if you are leaving South Africa via Johannesburg but well worth consideration. It is one of the world's great cities to visit.

Hello,

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think we will fly from Johannesburg to Kruger and then onto Cape Town and then fly back to Johannesburg. Would it be better to have a local South African travel agent book these flights or should I do it myself?

Any advice is welcome.

Personal preference only but we almost always book air travel directly, all over the world. Maybe local experts in South Africa can advise if its better to go through local agents.
